A murderer haunts the city, turning the unwary to stone. Between hunting this evil and corralling new arrivals, Flax struggles to guard both his life and his heart.
Quinn and Valerian have come through the trials of facing an undead lich queen and the perils of falling in love. Now they work to restore AURA to its previous strength and efficiency while navigating their new life with each other. Fortunately, they’re not in this alone.
Kai Hiltas has taken over as the head of the research department at AURA and has become everyone’s favourite workaholic, everyone except his lover Tenzin, who has had enough of his late nights and broken promises. As Kai tries to salvage his relationship, he finds a teacher for Quinn, who also happens to be one of Valerian’s new officers, Flax Wolfheart, a sexy elf with trouble written all over him.
Flax has motives beyond simply teaching Quinn to control his magic. He’s trying to recover from his own losses and failures, but he has a plan. The two newest elvish crossovers, Ash and Sage, are sizzling hot and might even like him. With them as backup as he tracks a deadly stone mage and figures out how to teach Quinn, Flax sees his chance to impress Val and snag a place by his captain’s side. On the hunt for both danger and redemption, Flax’s pursuit leads him ultimately down trails he never expected.
SQUEE! As stated at the end of my review for book one of this series, I was jumping straight into the sequel, and I wasn't kidding, peeps. I had so much fun with the world Angel Martinez and Bellora Quinn created, and I knew I wanted more. More sexy paranormal species, definitely more inter-species loving, and more of the guys I fell in love with during the previous installment. 'Flax's Pursuit' is book two in the 'AURA' series, and I apologize, but I'm not going to repeat myself as to what all of the acronyms mean. This is a series which I truly believe must be read in order, so if you haven't read book one, 'Quinn's Gambit', please do so before picking this one up.
Flax is a young elf, from the same world as Val. He has superior magical abilities, but, like most young elves, is quick to anger, impatient, and oh so eager to prove himself to his former battle prince, Val. He's also the elf Kai assigns to work with Quinn and his magic. This doesn't go over very well, initially, as Flax can't understand why Val would bond mate with a human, much less a runty little human who couldn't control his magic. You can imagine Quinn's response to all of this.
The latest Event dropped two warrior elves, Sage and Ash, smack down into Tokyo. I really loved it that the authors introduced these two men, mainly because I got the opportunity to experience all the confusion, disorientation, and overwhelming sadness that a new transplant can experience. It gave me a much better understanding and empathy for those who fall through the holes and into our world. Plus Sage and Ash are hot, and they bring a world of opportunities to Flax's life. For you see, Flax has been alone for too long in the human world, and the fade is beginning within him. And then, yowza, these authors did it again! Totally out of the blue, flying in from left field, they introduced a plot twist that I really wasn't expecting, but I adored.
So again, Angel and Bellora have hit it out of the park! The mystery/suspense portion of this story was excellent, but I really enjoyed the way the authors held me in thrall with it, and managed to incorporate so much of the personal and love stories of Val, Quinn, Flax, Ash, and Sage at the same time. My only question—when's the next book coming out?
