Amy Lane is among the best at complex character development, and she absolutely rocks at giving voice to deep emotion, pain, and then recovery from broken relationships better than anyone, in my opinion.

From the very first paragraph I couldn’t help but start to hum Hail, Hail, the Gang’s All Here. With my favorite guys in the middle of nowhere Southern California, to Henry and Lance, plus Galen… well, these are well loved characters from some spinoffs (or originals?!) and I love how they all came together with Jackson and Ellery.

Hm. Well. Not sure where to begin – there is so much packed into these 300+ pages. There is a haunted house with a gender-fluid ghost as guardian, Tucker is a jaded thirty-year-old with psychic baggage and – in his words – a magical wanker, there is a “witchy” family, very evil spirits, and a kitten named Squishbeans.

The anticipation of reading Cash and Glen’s love story from its beginning in Mexico while trying to rescue Cash’s best friend from a cult, has kept me on pins and needles all of these past months.

What an unexpected gem! This was such a surprising read that took me to places I very much didn't expect. The story differs greatly from Amy Lane's typical angsty romances that I've read in the past.

First, a necessary confession: I have read almost three dozen books by Amy Lane, all of which I began with a preternatural prejudice in expectation of pleasure. Having finished ‘Slow Pitch’, once again I can say that I am not disappointed!

A great big huge thank you to the author for not making ‘Shades of Henry’ predictable, nor in any way, shape, or form stale. What in the world am I rambling on about? This is the first book in Ms. Lane’s new series, ‘The Flophouse’, but it is a spin-off from two of her series, ‘Johnnies’ and ‘Fish Out of Water’.
