Davis~
It was just another job—at least it was supposed to be—but snaring the feisty blue dragon I’d been contracted to collect and her rider in my trap changed everything. Hunting dragons was my job, and I was damn good at it. I’d never missed a target. Never failed to make a delivery. So why was every step toward turning over my bounty suddenly a struggle? No quarry had ever managed to get under my skin, but something in Zale’s haunting blue eyes called to me like nothing ever had before.

Zale~
When Itsaso and I were kidnapped, we fought like hell but found ourselves at the dragon hunter’s mercy. He locked my dragon away, leaving me to face captivity alone. Now, all I have to rely on is the training that’s been drilled into me every day for as long as I can remember and biding my time, waiting for Davis to make a mistake. Or my brothers to find and rescue us. But something happened the first time I truly looked in Davis’s eyes, dark pools as deep and enchanting as the sea, and I realized I was in so much more danger than I thought. How could a ruthless dragon hunter be my perfect mate?

Book Review

The plot definitely thickens in this second book of the ‘Brotherhood of Ormarr’ series - politics and a struggle for control are the order of the day, an uprising is planned against the traitors, and as it turns out there is more than one organization like the Brotherhood. The power structure of this alternate reality is more complicated than it seemed at first. The dragons, dragon riders, and the magic that makes them work together become even more fascinating as more details emerge. The story is told in alternating first person by Zale, second youngest of the Ormarr brothers, and Davis, a hunter of wraiths.

Zale and his dragon, Itsaso, have to face being kidnapped, the revelation that Zale’s mate is their enemy, and an intensifying fight against villains who have so far remained in the background. Their close bond comes to the fore as they struggle, and through their eyes, I got a better feeling for how well the brothers relate. They still tease each other a lot – which is very realistic! – but the danger definitely makes them come closer as well.

Davis is a professional hunter, but his world tilts on its axis when he discovers that Zale, the man he just captured on orders from his clan, is his mate. Not only that, but the information Davis has been given tuns out to be fabricated and totally incorrect… He quickly recovers his wits and woe to the enemy once Davis’s considerable skills are added to the Brotherhood’s talents.

In this series, modern-day science confronts fantastical magic, and all kinds of things begin to happen. Zale and Davis start out as enemies, but both of them feel regret about the situation from the start. The issues get cleared up pretty quickly, and they end up focusing on the real enemies with a vengeance. Their story is more suspenseful than book one as they have a kidnapping to deal with and the identity of the villain (which was unfortunately revealed in book one) slowly becomes clearer to the four brothers. As more of the world is shown, I began to see the bigger picture of the series story arc a bit better.

If you like alternate realities whose secrets are slowly revealed across several books in a series, if you think a fierce dragon rider deserves a strong mate, and if you’re looking for a suspenseful action/adventure, then you might like this novella. I am looking forward to the next two stories to be published in this series.
