‘Yuletide Knights’ is not a sweet or fluffy Christmas story. And while the Christmas setting and timing add an extra “magical” dimension to some of what is going on, the issues and obstacles the main characters struggle with are very real and could occur at any time of the year.  In fact they have occurred for seven years already, and it is the helpful intervention of a third man, one bathed in mystery, that offers real hope for Michael and Beau to finally cut through the crap, deal with the misunderstandings, and help Michael solve the fundamental conflict inside himself.

I felt for Michael from the start. He is a former college professor, a political activist, and a staunch defender of equal rights. In one word, he is a fighter. He also believes a man always has to be strong never give in, and should definitely not be a submissive unless he wants to lose all self-respect. You can see where this is heading, right? With one little voice telling him to conform to existing gender norms on one side, and his deep desire to submit and be humiliated on the other, he is bound to be torn. He has been with Beau, on and off, for seven years, but admitting what he really wants is hard. Michael can barely do it with strangers, but telling the man he loves what he wants, what he needs? That is going too far for him. Until it gets to the point where Michael realizes he may lose Beau forever—that may just be enough for him to man up and be honest not just with himself, but with Beau.

Beau is a cop. He is out, and had to fight for being accepted by most and tolerated by some, but he is not ashamed of who he is. And that means it is very difficult for him to understand why Michael cannot be honest with him. Beau is clever enough, and has known Michael for long enough, to know about his need for submission, humiliation, and degradation. What Beau has trouble with is being pushed away again and again, and Michael not being able to tell him the truth. Beau is ready to give Michael anything he needs, but Michael has to talk to him. It takes a minor miracle, and the intervention of a very sexy stranger, for Beau to understand what happened, open up enough to truly accept Michael, and to try one more time.

If you like stories about difficult psychological situations and raw emotional issues, if you want to know more about two men who love each other deeply but have to learn how not to hurt each, and if you’re looking for a read that is intense, deeply emotional, and very hot (including one scorching threesome), then you will probably like this novel.
