Sean Maddox has one basic goal: to protect the Northwest Pack. That priority helps him stay grounded—until the day the pack rescues Liam. Suddenly Sean is finding any excuse to be around the sweet, blind shifter. But trying to focus his thoughts on keeping Liam safe and not exploring the whole laundry list of carnal fantasies he's been having is anything but grounding. It doesn't help that Sean's wolf makes it damn clear it believes Liam belongs to him.

From the first deep breath of Sean Maddox's intoxicating scent, all Liam wants to do is strip naked for the sexy beta and let the wolf claim him. Hiding away his desires seems like the best plan, given after a lifetime in captivity Liam is just learning what it means to be free. What does he know about being a mate? More to the point, would Sean even want him if he knew the truth?

As Sean and Liam struggle with their growing craving for each other an old enemy steps out of the shadows. With secrets lurking and fate twisting two worlds together a sacrifice must be made, but can the two mates live with the consequences?

Book Review

I enjoyed this second book in the ‘Pack of Light’ series, but I was surprised to find it was not about the half-breed, Cory, and Jacob, the Pack of Light twin of Jace, both of whom were introduced toward the end of the first book. This book reveals the romance between the Northwest Pack’s beta, Sean, and Cory’s rescued half-breed brother, Liam.

After being rescued from scientific experimentation at the hands of his captors, Liam finds in addition to retaining his blind state, his health is worsening.  Realizing that he will be unable to keep the signs of his illness secret from the pack, he moves to a nearby town with his brother, Cory. But sickness is not the only reason Liam decides to live apart; the young half-breed has become aware that the Northwest Pack’s beta, Sean, is his fated mate. Torn between wanting to be with Sean and his fear that if he and Sean mate, they will be bonded in the way of the Pack of Light—when one mate feels pain or dies, so does the other—Liam decides to keep the information from Sean. With Emma’s healing potions becoming increasing less effective, Liam feels his death is imminent and decides to sacrifice himself to save both packs from destruction at the hands of the scientists.

Sean can’t understand his fierce feelings for Liam and tries to rein in his lust for the little wolf, after all his own father lost Sean’s mother when her fated mate showed up to claim her. His father was never the same after that and Sean knows that if he acts on his feelings for Liam and Liam’s true mate shows up, Sean will be decimated.  Try as he might Sean cannot keep his mind or his hands off of Liam,  and when Liam goes missing Sean and his pack brothers are hot on the trail to rescue Liam and destroy the scientists.

In addition to revealing the inner turmoil and deep, self-reflective angst of this romantic pairing, this story sheds light on the threat facing the combined Northwest and Pack of Light wolves—the elusive immoral “Dimitri” and his group of scientists who are intent on harvesting the power of all paranormals.

While I liked Sean and Liam, for me the chemistry between them was somewhat stilted and I couldn’t connect with their story as much as I would have liked. But the possibility of other paranormals inhabiting this lush werewolf realm kept me eagerly turning the pages, hungry for more on this interesting twist.  I also enjoyed “seeing” more of the wolves’ home turf and Merek, Jace, and numerous others from the initial book make an appearance in this story. Overall I felt this book was a good follow-up to the first, a palate cleanser to what I still feel has the potential to be an exciting series.

Thank you, Draven St. James, for continuing this stimulating and fascinating series.
