A stranger’s kisses are sweet as honey…and addictive as the danger in the shadows.
Tyson Dakota’s got two things at the top of his to-do list when he turns 18. One, hanging out—legally—at Seaside’s local gay bar. Two, working alongside his cousin and fellow bear shifter, Police Chief John Dakota, as a cadet in training.
Meeting a tattooed, green-eyed human twink at the bar wasn’t exactly on his list, but he can’t say no to a passionate night with Amante. Whose kisses are as sweet and as his wild honey scent, which drives Tyson’s bear almost out-of-control with desire. Tyson can’t resist going back—again and again—for another taste of the secretive stranger.
Their mutual lust—and growing feelings—mute the alarm bells in the back of Tyson’s mind as he begins helping with an investigation into who’s the kingpin behind Seaside’s rising meth epidemic.
By the time Tyson connects the dots, it’s too late. He’s already lost his heart to a man who might as well be trapped behind an enemy’s gun. And the pursuit of justice could cost them both their lives.
First edition published by Dreamspinner Press, March 2017.
Seaside, Oregon, is the setting for this story about shifters living peacefully (if not openly) among humans – but it is proving to be a lot less idyllic than it sounds. After the series of gruesome murders that bearshifter chief of police, John Dakota, dealt with in the first volume, it is now time for one of the secondary characters, John’s cousin Tyson, to be the focus of attention. Tyson was a kid with attitude problems in book one, but that has totally changed. He is a bearshifter adult now, it is his turn to meet and fall for a human, and he has to deal with a ton of doubts, questions, and a growing meth epidemic nobody would have suspected in such a small town. It’s a story full of subterfuge, surprises, and suspense.
Tyson tells the story in a very youthful voice. He has just turned eighteen, has secured an internship with his uncle, police chief John Dakota, and intends to start full training at the police academy in September. Tyson is determined to be an exemplary police cadet and extremely motivated to do a good job – especially since he has a lot to prove. Just before the internship starts, he meets Amante, a man he is utterly intrigued by, but as the case progresses, there are hints that all may not be well. Amante is not the only one behaving oddly – Tyson’s mother has some very weird moments as well.
As the case progresses and the police’s net widens, Tyson makes a few discoveries that surprise and even shock him. He has to deal with his abusive father who suddenly appears and wants to reconcile – not that Tyson is willing or even interested after the man beat him up when he was a kid, then vanished. Despite everything that points to something strange going on with Amante, Tyson can’t help but fall for him. Keeping the faith when he realizes they may be mates is increasingly difficult, and the suspense lasts until almost the last chapter.
If you like mysteries with a paranormal slant and realistic criminals, if drug dealers and those who go after them are your thing, and if you’re looking for a suspenseful read with hints and counterhints, a few surprises, and a hot romance on top of the revelations, then you will probably like this novella.
