As a member of a covert military unit, John Davidson isn’t scared of much. Yet one look into Heath Kane’s dark blue eyes and he knows a different kind of fear for the first time. John can’t be gay, at least not out and proud in his unit, even with Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repealed. He’s never been interested enough in any man to risk the fallout.
Heath’s hometown wasn’t the best place for a gay kid to grow up, but his grandmother did her darnedest to make it good for him. Now he’s paying her back for all her love. She’s getting older and needs help, so he returns home to wait tables at the Corner Café while taking online courses to get his degree. Even though the Army base provides him with a lot of buff eye candy, he knows it’s best to keep his head down.
Neither Heath nor John can deny their attraction, and John’s finally willing to act on their mutual interest. But holding on to each other will mean big changes in both their lives.

'Why I Love Waiters' is book two in T.A. Chase's series, 'Why I Love', and it reacquainted me with some familiar faces, mainly Herb and Chuck, plus it introduced me to John, Chuck's brother, and Heath. I liked the previous book, which starred a homicide detective and a geek, so I was looking forward to this one, starring an Army Ranger and a waiter. Once again, an incongruous match.
Looks like Heath is a lot like Herb in the fact that there isn't much of a filter between his brain and his mouth. It's gotten him into some trouble, that's for sure. An only child, Heath left his small town and headed to college and the big city. But when his dad and gramps were killed, he came home to help grandma with the family restaurant. John is now free, since the repeal of DADT, although it hasn't gone into effect yet, and he doesn't care about the men in his unit knowing about him, but he's not willing to risk Heath's safety, especially after hearing how Heath was attacked and beaten a couple of years before. Ever since John saw Heath, his first day at the cafe, he's wanted him, and wanted to protect him.
It doesn't take John and Heath very long before they're falling in love. Of course, they've been flirting and talking at the cafe for a couple of months. A four day trip to Atlanta, where they're joined by Chuck and Herb, really solidifies it. And again proves how insanely adorable Herb is. Everything is going well until bigotry and hatred intervene, leaving John with some serious decisions to make regarding his future and his career.
As much as I enjoyed John and Heath's tale, there were a few things I had difficulty seeing past. There were a large number of inconsistencies, which, frankly, I found to be very distracting. The similarities within these main characters to the main characters in book one were huge and, in my opinion, detracted from who John and Heath could've been. I did like the ending, which tied in nicely with the previous book. Now, I will admit to being very excited about the next book since it features the CEO of the pharmaceutical company which Herb and Jessie work for, and his relationship with his head of security. Yep, can't wait.
