They have to find him ... but how?
A former member of an elite military special forces unit, Leo Bailey can handle anything life throws at him. Except maybe approaching a certain gorgeous, purple mohawk-wearing, heavily pierced artist. Not without his three eye-rolling wingmen along to push him in the right direction.
One look at the mouthwateringly muscled, military buzzcut-sporting man with the endearing blush, and Vincent Noland is in love. Or at least in lust. Love comes later. Then marriage ... and sweet, adorable Oscar.
Life is perfect -- the stuff of fairy tale happily ever afters -- except for Arthur Fletcher, whose unsettling reactions to them threaten to upset the happy balance of their lives. But it isn’t Arthur who throws their lives into turmoil.
A freak event causes Oscar to go missing and leaves both men frantic to rescue their son. As they piece together the clues, they discover that Oscar isn’t somewhere. He’s somewhen. And Arthur Fletcher holds the key -- or rather the glass beads -- to their one chance of finding Oscar.
Will Leo’s training, Vinnie’s determination, and Arthur’s knowledge help them find Oscar, or is the little boy doomed to spend the rest of his life at the mercy of a primitive civilization? Could there be a third possibility?
In this exciting yet sweet novel about military-trained Leo and his artistically gifted partner Vinnie, two men are confronted with the consequences of time travel when their son, Oscar, suddenly vanishes and they figure out he has traveled back in time. The focus of the story is not just on their need to survive what they will face when they go look for him, but equally on the emotional fallout of losing their toddler son if they can’t figure out a way to go after him. It makes for great reading, a wonderful adventure, and some delightful surprises.
“Could there be a third possibility?” is the question asked at the end of the blurb, and one that intrigues me whenever I am given a choice between two options. My mind automatically goes to “But what if there is a third choice?” It seems as though Addison Albright wrote this story for me – someone excellent at discerning out-of-the-box alternatives – but she gave it a delightful extra twist. This story has a fairly slow start, made easy to enjoy because I knew the storm must be coming and the suspense as to when and how “the freak event” described in the blurb would happen had me eagerly turning the pages. When it does happen, bringing with it the kind of headache only time travel can induce, I was curious how Leo and Vinnie would deal with it. And then the outcome that seemed obvious to me as of the middle of the book was not the one provided by the author. I love it when I am confronted by surprises like that!
Leo and Vinnie are very different men, but they fit extremely well as a couple. They both love their adopted son Oscar and would do anything to keep him safe and happy. Neither man has any idea how difficult that will be, but both step up to the challenge when Oscar suddenly vanishes. I loved how they prepare for the almost-unknown with determination and, on Leo’s side, with military precision. Vinnie provides the emotional balance and, together, they are a formidable force in Oscar’s favor. I won’t say too much about the details of the plot and the obstacles caused by the time travel as well as the author’s sneakily introduced complications, since that would be a spoiler. But I can say that ‘When Are You?’ is a great mix between adventure, a roller-coaster of emotions, and a wonderful testimony to what loving parents can achieve when their child is in trouble.
If you like stories about established couples dealing with unexpected challenges, if time travel is your thing, and if you’re looking for a fun read with more than one surprise, then you will probably love this novel as much as I do. It’s amazing to the very end and left a smile on my face.
