The Velvet Glove is rebuilding after the destruction of the bombing. Everything is will be new and improved, and a new generation of men will be taking over the day to day running of the place.
Efren is one such man. Promoted from simple trainer to in charge of the training salles, he’s focused on getting the place up and running along with Hawk and Jester. Something is distracting him, though, pulling at him.
Mabon, a Setian – a race that’s ultra-sensitive to pheromones and the chemistry of love and sex – is one of the workers brought in to paint the new walls. He knows he’s not allowed to interact with the Glove residents, none of the workers are, but for him it’s especially important given his race. He too has been distracted, though, a song building inside him.
When Efren and Mabon finally meet, they are immediately drawn to each other as surely as two magnets. Efren is sure they are meant to be, but Mabon is worried. They come from two very different stations in life and he knows he’s about to be sent away. Can they really find a happy ending together, or are they doomed from the start?
First edition published at Torquere Press in November, 2013.
First of all, I have to admit that I am a long-time fan of the Velvet Glove series and the escapism and fantastical stories it excelled at. So, going into this follow-up series I was very torn between excitement that there will finally be more Velvet Glove books and fear that it could never be as good as the original, because I just loved all those characters and the, sometime highly unlikely, things they got up to in the "premier BDSM club of the galaxy". Those are not small shoes to fill!
Now that I have read the first story, I have to say I look forward to this new adventure. The original club was destroyed due a bombing at the end of the last series, and the key characters retired to a tropical island. Well deserved for them, but annoying to me because their stories stopped. This new series is beginning with the reconstruction and rebuilding of the club, with two of my favorite characters, Jester and Hawk, taking over the role of managing the club. They, and I am hoping a few other of the secondary characters, provide a nice "bridge" into the new series.
In this first story there is Efren, who used to be one of the trainers getting Doms up to speed, now in charge of the training rooms. He is determined to do a good job, and the quickly approaching opening date is adding a lot of stress to his life, but he is not too focused to miss the opportunity to find his own boy. The pull he feels toward someone, without knowing who it is, is strong enough to make him finally follow his instincts rather than just looking with his eyes. And when he finds Mabon, he is determined not to ever let go.
Mabon is a Setian and very sensitive to pheromones, chemicals, and sensations in general. At the club as one of the work crew, he sees himself as a simple painter and way below the status of pretty much everyone around him. He is deathly afraid of making a mistake and looking anyone in the eye. His culture seems to believe in a strict caste system, so Mabon cannot believe that Efron will really want him – he is a simple painter, after all. Plus his boss is a tyrant who threatens to remove him from the planet if he doesn’t do a good job and stay out of trouble. The sensual delights Efron shows him, however, as well as the "song" he hears and harmony he feels, have him dreaming of a life with someone whom he can actually bond with.
If you're a fan of the Velvet Glove series and have your doubts, give this one a go. It intrigued me enough, to want to see more new stories, especially since most of the elements that made me like the precursor are present here as well. This story, by the way, is much more about the sensual side of BDSM, with just a little kinky play, to make it accessible to readers who prefer their BDSM a little lighter and more on the fun and playful side. Looking forward to the next one!
