When a scientific procedure has unexpected results, Rory tries to make the best of a bad situation and ends up becoming an accidental superhero.

Medical scientist Rory is working in his top secret underground laboratory in Central London when a procedure has unexpected results. Far from curing his patient, a monkey called Arnold, of an unpleasant disease, he manages to turn the animal invisible! In his panic, Rory accidentally gets some of the serum he injected Arnold with into his own bloodstream, rendering himself invisible, too.

With disbelief and confusion filling his brain, Rory finds it impossible to think straight, much less to figure out what precisely happened, and what on earth he’s going to do about it. So, after stripping off his clothes—which remain visible and therefore would give him away—he heads out into the London night for a walk to try to clear his head. Soon, a series of events lead him into a situation where he takes heroic action to protect somebody from hurting themselves, or someone else. And, just when Rory thinks things can’t get any weirder, he’s found, completely naked, in the home of the man he’d helped the previous evening. How can he explain his way out of this?

Book Review

‘Unseen’ is the perfect title for this short story – where an “accidental” superhero finds out that, as interesting as it may sound to be invisible, there are definite drawbacks as well. Rory has no idea what awaits him when he renders himself invisible – and I have to admit that his antics really amused me. The sense of humor in this story makes it very entertaining, while the basic plot of a superhero finding out what it is he can actually do with a new ability, provided a nice level of suspense as to how things are going to turn out for the main character.

Rory doesn’t only gain unexpected abilities, he has no idea what to do with them once he has them. He ends up saving a stranger from himself - more or less by accident - and it leads to yet more unforeseen consequences. I can’t say too much here without spoiling your reading fun, but the blurb describes the scene where Rory awakens – naked – in a man’s house, and that truly is just the beginning of what awaits him. And since explaining his way out of this won’t really work, he has to come up with another solution…

If you like stories about superheroes who have yet to learn what to do with their new powers, if you enjoy stories that are as funny as they are hot, and if you’re looking for a read full of unlikely events, surprises, and written with a wonderful (and very British) sense of humor, then you will probably like this short story.
