Tyler Knoll was born one wild, stormy night in April 2013.
Of course, Tyler might tell you he was born twenty years earlier, but should we believe anything he says? That’s for you to decide.
In Tyler’s first adventure—like many a gay man before him—he was SNARED by gay porn, wallowing in tales of bigger, stronger, harder….
Then his fickle mind was seduced and SHREDDED by the prospect of BDSM and slavery.
When a Big Misunderstanding SLASHED at Tyler’s sanity, almost costing him his life, he turned to another genre for his salvation. But even this encounter proved potentially hazardous—not from freezing temperatures, but at the hands of irate fans.
Finally, tired and SCREWED by his all his trials and tribulations, he discovers—like many storybook heroes before him—that sometimes Mr. Right is closer than we think.
This book is hilarious! Very unusual, with a main character who constantly interferes in his own story by commenting on it. There are more sarcastic and other observations about anything and everything that comes into his mind than should be legal. The result, for me, was an excellent workout for all muscles involved in laughing – and then some! While there is definitely a story – and I’ll get to that in a minute – what makes this book so special is all the “extra” around that basic narrative. A.B. Gale says she “channeled” Tyler Knot, as you will find out in the introduction/foreword that precedes the fist of the four shorter stories that make up this book. She has Tyler talk straight to the reader, and comments like this gave me an early clue what I was in for:
“TMI? Yeah, well, if that sort of thing bothers you, send the book back to Amazon NOW and demand a refund. Or were you going to wait until you finished reading it first? Typical!”
But then she takes a swipe at editors and reviewers as well, much to my continued amusement:
“My editor made a note in the margin at this point, suggesting I was tempting fate by taunting reviewers, but I assured her that since I’ve already done the same to readers and editors, they might feel left out if I didn’t.”
With that said, just to give you a feel for the style, the story is told in four parts, just like the blurb says. ‘Snared’, ‘Shredded’, ‘Slashed’, and ‘Screwed’ represent the four stages of Tyler’s intracompany relationships, extracurricular adventures, and other events. There is an excursion into BDSM, sort of, a kidnapping, a daring rescue, falling walls and breakthroughs into another book’s reality…the list goes on. Then there is Gareth, a former Marine pulled into his brother’s business to whip everyone into shape. Said brother, Dermot, is Tyler’s boss - except Tyler works in the mail room, so he doesn’t have much interaction with anyone. With Gareth’s arrival, all of that changes, and Tyler has no idea what he’s in for.
As it turns out, neither did I – know what I was in for, that is. Reading the blurb for the collection and reading the four books is a totally different experience, and all I will say here, so as not to spoil your enjoyment, is that it is well worth reading all four books. Don’t forget to bring your sense of humor, a generous helping of tissues (for wiping any tears of hilarity that may escape), and an open mind. Oh yes, please do NOT bring anything liquid – you’ll spray your e-reader or computer screen for sure if you attempt to sip any type of hot or cold drink while reading this.
If you like stories that challenge the limits of “accepted writing parameters”, if you want to laugh your head off, and if you’re looking for a story that is different, creatively told, and yet has a very romantic happy ending, then you will probably enjoy ‘Tyler Knoll’s Just for Fun’ as much as I did. Thank you, A.B. Gale, for making me laugh while giving me a great gay romance “in disguise” at the same time.
