DecemberCon 2017. John Perlan, aka YouTuber “SmileyNibor,” has come to the con for one reason and one reason only: to see his idol, actor Derek Kitow. And since Derek has announced he’ll be dressed as the original Aquaman, Perlan decides to come as the Aquaman reboot. It helps that he already has the beard and the bod to make a convincing Momoaman.

But when Derek Kitow makes his entrance, he recognizes Perlan from his tiny YouTube channel and wants him onstage! Has Kitow been following him online? Could SmileyNibor’s hero also be a fan? And what exactly does Kitow have in mind by inviting Perlan to meet him after the panel?

Book Review

‘Trading Tridents’ is the first Advent Calendar story I’m reading this year that I did not immediately like. Not the story’s fault at all, and after thinking about it a bit, I realize now that I only had some initial trouble because it is so different from the others in the collection. It’s funny, very sexy, and if you are a member of any fandom out there at all, you will probably be able to relate.

“DecemberCon” may be fictional (or it may be real, my Google search was not conclusive), but the geeky main character, his determination to meet his idol, and the whole setting at the con sound entirely plausible, if a little exaggerated for poetic license. Much like a parody, and that is exactly what reading most of the story felt like to me. As for what transpires there once John runs into Derek – well, I’ll let you be the judge of that. It definitely makes for an entertaining read!

If you like the world of fandoms, cons, YouTube stars and the way they look at the world, if you’re curious about what might happen if a fan of some YouTube fame runs into his much more famous idol, and if you’re looking for a good laugh in a December setting free of any Christmas entanglements, then you might like this short story.
