The only way for Matt to be with Jordan is to put his life back on tracks. And if it requires physical injuries, Matt is ready to pay that price. One price he isn’t ready to pay, though, is other people’s mistakes. And as his past catches up with him, a lot of such people are ganging up on him, including cops.
In ‘To Fight His Heart’ the story of security expert extraordinaire Matt Glenn continues, and while it is not as full of tragedy and depression as book two, the tone remains serious. And that is entirely appropriate on several levels: Matt is still dealing with “life after Ben”, he has a decision to make regarding Jordan and his clear willingness to get back into a relationship, and to top it all off, a series of harassment by various cops means someone is after him despite the fact that all the corrupt cops are supposed to have been rounded up.
Matt is more than a little up in the air at the beginning of this third volume. He may have dealt with the worst of the emotional fallout of his partner Ben getting shot, but that does not mean he is okay. Matt embarks on a course to get physically fit again, but he has no idea what to do professionally. His old job is no longer as attractive as it used to be. On the personal side, Jordan is very interested in getting back together and Matt is attracted to him, but hesitant to make the commitment.
Then a series of “accidents” and outright harassment by cops raise Matt’s suspicions about someone being after him, and the suspense increases by the page. Helpful bystanders, clever plans around hidden cameras, and Jordan’s determination to help are all needed if Matt wants to survive intact. The mystery is clever, the clues rare, and my resulting entertainment was considerable.
If you want to know how Matt does after recovering from his breakdown and returning from his travels, if you want to see him grow, change, and regain his confidence, and if you’re looking for a read that is a suspenseful mystery as well as a story about love blossoming again where it had previously withered, then you will probably like this novella. I think it’s a satisfying conclusion to Matt’s and Jordan’s story and am happy to have seen him come this far after the loss he suffered.
