Can two men let go of the past in order to find their future together?

When helo pilot Glen Rhodes flies Navy SEALs into the most dangerous places on earth, he has nerves of steel. Since his trusted Dom’s death three years ago, though, the thought of submitting makes him panic.

Determined to move on and long past ready to release the adrenaline rush from his job, Glen returns to home ground—and to the bar he hasn’t had the heart to enter for three long years. There, he meets a man who seems to fit naturally into the void.

Derek Mann has suffered his own losses, and he isn’t looking for permanent. Easy conquests don’t interest him, either. One look at Glen’s proud military bearing and sad eyes tells him that he has a challenge on his hands. And that winning Glen’s trust will unleash something wild and beautiful.

The plan is to tread lightly. But from the first touch of skin on skin, there’s no holding back…except when it comes to their deepest emotions. A Christmas Eve crisis pushes them both to their limits, leaving them no choice but to let go of the past...or let it pull them apart.

Book Review

In another fascinating volume of the 'Men of Honor' series, S.E. Jakes tackles the theme of loss and second chances. Of course, it isn’t as easy as it sounds, as each of the two main characters has some very specific issues on top of the fact he has lost a loved partner. Personal preferences and needs come into play, as do their professions and "what friends and family might think". Combining all these elements and spinning them into a tale results in a psychologically interesting story that is as much about the men finding themselves as it is about them finding love.

Glen may be tough on the outside, and he has his life together as a Navy SEAL pilot, but internally he is in deep trouble. His Dom died a few years ago, the man who saved him form his own family, and the one attempt he made to find someone new ended in complete disaster. Glen has such a hard time trusting now, that only utter despair and the burning need for someone to tie him down drives him to trying again. And while trust in Derek not hurting him physically does slowly grow, Glen has a lot more trouble opening up emotionally. So much, that is about to lose everything when the situation comes to a head.

Derek is immediately attracted to Glen, and while his needs are not as urgent, he can relate to Glen's issue. Derek lost his sub a few years ago, experimented for a while but hasn't found anyone who is right for him, who can fascinate him in the long run. Derek is pretty good at understanding what Glen needs, and more than ready to give it to him, but even his monumental patience runs out eventually. The crisis, when it hits, is intense for both of them, and only their beginning love might be able to get them through it. Just the kind of emotional roller coaster I really enjoy.

This story has its own intensity. In this case, it comes less through external elements and more via the internal conflicts and deliberations going on in both men's heads. If you like emotionally intense stories, if you enjoy the more complicated relationships where each man has to figure himself as well as his partner out, and if you're looking for hot and passionate lovemaking, you will probably like this book.
