Book Review

In this book's world, some intriguing inter-species crossbreeding has resulted in all kinds of new paranormal creatures. Vampire/witch combinations threaten the demons, demon/vampire hybrids are a danger to witches, and the human crossbreeds with both vampires and demons only add to the confusion. Of course, even with all this wild intermingling of species, you still have the basic fight for dominance, except many of the fighting lines are less clear with all the genetic interference, so to speak. It is however, the ideal background for a captivating story about a few men who try to figure out all the warring factions' objectives because they want one thing: to survive and be happy.

Martin is a witch with a problem. His twelve-year-old nephew is sick, and he needs vampire blood to help him. Not being able to ask a vampire friend for help, since he doesn't really like them, he decides to steal some blood. He gets his nephew to safety, but then his problems begin: the vampire he stole from is not exactly happy about the fact.

Rafael, or Rafe, the vampire prince is ready to punish Martin for daring to steal from him. Unfortunately for him, this is easier said than done. Rafe may be cool and commanding, but he also quickly develops a weakness for Martin. Not one to shy back from the unusual attraction to a witch, he sets out to make Martin his own. Once he understands that keeping the human witch a prisoner is not the best way to do that, the romance has an actual chance of taking off.

Broson is a demon-vampire hybrid who "identifies as a vampire". All he wants to do is to sing, but his father, the lord of all demons, has other plans for him. Broson has no intention of helping the demons, but since his vampire mother is a captive, and being used to blackmail him, he has little choice. It's a good thing he is clever enough to think up a way out of his dilemma!

This is a fast-moving, action packed story that will leave you out of breath by the time you're done. If you like paranormal stories, if you enjoy reading about dividing lines and loyalties that are blurred not just by what people want, but who they are on a genetic level, and if you're looking for an entertaining, if slightly scary, tale about a human witch who falls in love with a vampire prince, then has to deal with the consequences, you will probably enjoy this book.
