Hatori’s life changed forever when he discovered that his real father was a lycan, as his frequent illnesses suddenly made sense. After achieving his first shift into wolf form, he hoped the last remaining clan of lycans could offer him some relief after a lifetime of suffering.

Yet nothing goes as planned when he travels east to meet with this clan. Since his first full shift, Hatori’s sensitivity to—and craving for—vampire blood has been a great burden. Surrounded by very tempting vampires and confused by what the lycans have to tell him, Hatori doesn’t know what his next move should be. But when one of the vampires tastes Hatori’s blood, it becomes obvious the fates wanted Hatori to travel east for a very different reason.

Book Review

This book is the first of a trilogy set in the same world as 'The Year of Hearts', the first trilogy set in Valdora, and my fascination with this feudal society of the year 3000-something where vampires rule only increased.  In this second trilogy, I got to know more about the mysterious lycans as yet another priest-to-be bonds with a vampire and more secrets are revealed.

Hatori has been suffering illnesses for years, but when he finds out it is because his father was a lycan, it suddenly all makes sense. In this world, hybrids between the different species of supernaturals exist, but they almost never survive to adulthood. Hatori is also completely dependent on vampire blood, which he hates. He hopes to find a solution amongst his clan of lycans, so he sets off on a trip to find them, But once there, nothing is as it seems and Hatori's suffering is far from over.

Kyo is a vampire lord, an while he knows he has a mate "out there somewhere", he believes that mate will be a female and he is in nor particular rush to find her. Imagine his shock and surprise when he finds out that Hatori is his destined mate, not meant for Kyo's brother at all. He does feel drawn to Hatori, and settles down to idea pretty quickly, but Hatori has issues accepting Kyo's fairly sudden change of heart.

If you liked the first trilogy set in Valdora, if you enjoy reading about mates who have to battle their own demons before being able to accept their future, and if you're looking for a hot read set in a fantastical world, then you will probably like this novella.
