All Charlie O'Bannon wanted for the new year was to get laid. Attending the company New Year's Eve party seems like the perfect place to find someone, but when the clock strikes midnight and he grabs the closet person to him and plants a big kiss on him, he's not prepared for the firestorm that ignites.

Marcus Aguilera is the leader of his vampire tribe. He has always known he would have a vampire as his mate. It was tradition, and he was nothing if not traditional. When a gorgeous man with sultry eyes plants a kiss on his lips at the stroke of midnight, Marcus is stunned that he has finally found his rajaaka. He's devastated when he realizes his mate is human and leaves him after a night of passion.

But the fates will not be denied. When Charlie's path crosses with Marcus's again, the two men have to decide if they will accept the gift fate has given them or if they will fight what was meant to be. The world around them is changing. There are those who will fight beside them and those that will do everything to destroy them. Only by holding on to each other do they have a chance of surviving.

Book Review

In this third story set in Vaile Industry’s world, the tongue-in-cheek humor is back, but so are action, suspense, a few surprises and some promising revelations. Centuries-old vampire prince Nikolas and his human personal assistant and mate, Jon, are back, but the focus is on the rather old-fashioned leader of a rival vampire tribe, Marcus. In previous encounters, Marcus has always emphasized how superior to humans vampires are, so when he finds his rajaaka, a man named Charlie, at Nikolas’s company’s New Year’s party, and realizes that Charlie is human, Marcus panics. He is a traditionalist and his mate just cannot be human. So Marcus denies anything significant ever happened and vanishes. What follows is a tale of confusion, a reunion with more than one issue, and some surprises that seem to change the rules of the game.

Charlie is still dealing with the consequences of his New Year’s encounter almost a year later. He has suddenly developed some unusual abilities, and they are the reason Marcus – without knowing it is Charlie – has him brought to his coven. Charlie is not amused at the prospect of becoming anyone’s pet, not that Marcus seems to want him in any capacity, but as Charlie figures out what is going on, he definitely develops his own ideas about what should be done about things.

Marcus is so steeped in tradition and the need to protect Charlie (though he will not admit the latter), that it takes him way longer than necessary to realize they need each other. Vampire politics get in the way, and evil plan unfolds, and through it all Marcus slowly starts to change. Nikolas and Jon help, but Marcus is still the one who needs to grow and get with the program. Once he does? Hold on to your hats!

If you like humans who are more than able to hold their own, no matter what shocking discoveries they make about their new reality, if you enjoy watching two men who believe they cannot possibly accept each other and their differences fall in love, and if you’re looking for an action-packed read full of betrayal, passion, and more than one revelation, then you will probably enjoy this novella. I loved reading it, and look forward to the next one that will hopefully continue the exciting worldbuilding that really began to take off in this third book of the series.
