Loxis lost his fated mate years ago, and he put aside all ideas of ever falling in love. He devoted his life to fighting demons and helping their victims to fill the void left in his heart. Everything changed when he was summoned to fight a demon and help rescue a young man named Hiroki. Loxis can’t fight his feelings for the damaged young man, but he fears scaring Hiroki with his desires.
Hiroki has finally emerged from a lifetime of pain and torture, and he wants nothing more than to share that life with the man who rescued him. Loxis treats Hiroki as if he is made of glass, though Hiroki knows he sees longing in Loxis’s eyes in unguarded moments. As they embark on a mission to Hiroki’s homeland, he vows that he is going to make the vampire acknowledge what is happening between them, no matter what he has to do.
After the second book in the ‘Year of Stars’ trilogy, I was wondering whether Loxis, the adopted half vampire/half demon who has lost his mate to death, might find happiness. The attraction between him and the rejected and abused Hiroki (also a half demon) at the end of that book was strong, and both have been wounded so much, it seemed they might make a good match. The problem with having been hurt, of course, is that the next relationship isn’t easy, and as a consequence, this third book is full of angst and drama before the two men get their acts together.
Hiroki has known nothing but rejection from his mother, followed by pain and torture at the hands of the demon who imprisoned him for many years. He wants to find love, but does not dare hope anyone could fall for him. Loxis is the man who saved him, and Hiroki wants to be his mate so badly he can taste it. But he is shy and doesn’t have a lot of self-esteem, so he doesn’t dare make a move. He’s also worried about his brother, also kept by the demon, and when Loxis is happy to help him free the man from stasis, Hiroki begins to hope for more.
Loxis lost his fated mate to death, and didn’t think he could love anyone else. Little does he know… When he helps free Hiroki, he soon learns that love will find a way, fated mate or not. But Loxis is afraid of crowding Hiroki and holds back. Yes, you got it, that makes Hiroki feel rejected and so the drama unfolds.
If you liked the first trilogy set in Valladora and the previous books in this second trilogy, if you enjoy reading about mates who are too afraid to approach each other until circumstances make them realize what’s what, and if you're looking for a hot read set in a fantastical world, then you will probably like this novella.
