Aldrich was the head enforcer for his vampire tribe. He's seen the worst of humanity, both vampire and human. When he finds a sweet man in need of protection, he knows he's up for the job. Mating is something different altogether. Mating requires something he doesn't have. Gentleness. Understanding. Patience. Love.
Mateo has been looking for someone to see him for a very long time. He's been through his share of jerks because of it. When the head enforcer acknowledges him, Mateo can't help but hope for something more, but when Aldrich disappears without a word, he admits defeat.
All too soon, Aldrich realizes Mateo is his mate. He isn't quite sure what to do with the sexy little man until someone goes after Mateo, and then he knows exactly what to do. Death won't come easily to his enemies because Aldrich doesn't have an ounce of compassion in his soul for those who threaten what's his.
Each of the stories set in Vaile Industry’s world have been full of tongue-in-cheek humor, action, suspense, and a few surprises. Centuries-old vampire prince Nikolas and his human personal assistant and mate, Jon, are back, as are many others I have grown to really like. But the focus is on Aldrich, an enforcer now working for Prince Nikolas, and Mateo, a shy vampire who is desperately looking for acceptance. Aldrich does not have an easy time of accepting that he has a rajaaka and Mateo can’t believe he even has a mate. Their love story is interrupted by an aggressive member of the tribe, as well as several assassination attempts- aimed at Mateo of all people!
Aldrich is the stereotypical macho vampire: grumpy, possessive, and utterly devoted to his mate once he has found him. He has been watching Mateo for a while and feels sorry for the rejection Mateo encounters every time he tries to make a connection to a man. But Aldrich has no idea how important Mateo is to him until he puts his foot down and insists Mateo stop being with other vampires. It made me laugh that even this sudden possessiveness doesn’t clue him in!
Mateo is a wonderful guy, but he is lonely. Everyone seems to overlook him, even the men he tries to charm forget him the moment the BJ is finished. Mateo works hard to get his pastry chef degree but has little hope of making it beyond dishwasher even once he graduates. He isn’t very ambitious, he’s not assertive enough for that, but he does dream about a gourmet kitchen, a man who loves him, and being seen and accepted in Nikolas’s tribe.
If you like stories about shy vampires realizing their dreams, if you believe that finding a mate can be as unexpected as it is wonderful, and if you’re looking for an entertaining story with a touch of mystery, suspense, and lots of action, then you will probably like this novella as much as I do. Between old and new enemies getting what’s coming to them, a super-sweet romance, and some mouthwatering food, it is a great addition to the series.
