Orpheus "O" Drummond, a recent Ph.D. graduate, is visiting Australia after defending his thesis, and being dumped by his boyfriend. While alone on the beach in Australia was not how he’d originally planned on spending his Christmas, when O runs into Gage, he figures Santa knew exactly what he was doing.
Gage is traveling away from his Texan home, trying to “find himself.” When he finds O instead, he doesn’t think things could have worked out better. Together Gage and O celebrate Christmas in the best way they can think of.
First edition published by Dreamspinner Press, December 2014.
Sweet and cute, this is a story about two men who haven’t had it easy, each in their different way, and are looking for a “Christmas away from it all”. What better place to go than the other end of the world, which for them happens to be Australia. Everything is different, including the weather, but as much as they wanted a change, one thing has remained the same: they are still (albeit secretly) hoping for some companionship. What they find in each other turns out to be even better than that!
O is from Canada and has recently been dumped by his boyfriend (who sounds like a right a**, if you ask me). And while he’d been planning this to be a joint trip to celebrate him defending his PhD, he is determined to enjoy it even though he is now single. His reasoning why he prefers O to his real name is hilarious, and made me smile from page one.
Gage just wanted to be away from Texas, I think, he never really says. He has been in Sydney for a month, and running into O makes his day. Maybe his week. He is cute, has learnt to keep to himself around all the “macho Australian dudes”, and is more than happy to find O is batting for his team. When they connect the sparks fly, and both of them are willing to go for more than a one-time encounter.
If you like short, sweet, and entertaining, and if you’re looking for a read that is hot for other reasons than the Australian summer temperatures, then you might like this short story.
