Hunting ghosts and finding more than they bargained for.
Blaine Franks is a member of the paranormal research group the Supernatural Explorers. When the group loses their techie to a cross-country move, newly graduated Flynn Huntington gets the job. Flynn fits in with the guys right off the bat, but when it comes to him and Blaine, it’s more than just getting along.
Things heat up between Blaine and Flynn as they explore their first haunted building, an abandoned hospital, together. Their relationship isn’t all that progresses, though, and soon it seems that an odd bite on Blaine’s neck has become much more.
Hitchhiking ghosts, a tragic love story forgotten by time, and the mystery of room 204 round out a romance where the things that go bump in the night are real.
First edition published by Dreamspinner Press, October 2017.
Ghost stories are not really my thing, and horror definitely isn’t, but I figured that nothing in the ‘Dreamspun Beyond’ imprint would be too scary – and, luckily for my peace of mind, I was right. While real ghost/horror aficionados might think this novel not ghostly enough, or lacking brutality and gore, for someone like me who prefers things a little less intimidating, the “ghost factor” in ‘The Supers’ is just right. “Supernatural Explorers” is basically about, as one of the characters summarizes it, “Five gay guys in a shitty van!” Based on the blurb I expected an updated sort of Ghostbusters – and there are some similarities, but it turned out to be a different story: creepier, more suspenseful, less humorous, and definitely featuring more hot loving. The paranormal concept behind it is interesting and unusual, as far as I can see. It certainly kept me guessing for quite a while and made for a pretty unique mystery to solve.
Blaine has seen ghosts all his life and loves exploring creepy buildings to try to communicate with them. He is good at a lot of different things and helps in his parents’ business to make money, but hunting ghosts is his passion. Blaine has never found a way for it to be profitable, but maybe hiring a “science guy” who can make it all measurable will help getting the funding for a TV show Blaine wants.
Flynn has just graduated and is all about making things measurable. He has sensed his deceased mother’s ghost a few times but is otherwise inexperienced. Keen to prove ghosts exist by using science, he joins Blaine’s crew and while he thinks he is ready to experience otherworldly phenomena, events soon get a lot creepier and scary than he expected.
The former hospital that becomes the focus of Blaine and Flynn’s explorations is certainly a great source of weirdness. I won’t say too much about the plot so as not to spoil the surprise, but between the idea of ghosts “hitchhiking” a ride with the living and what happened in room 204, there is quite a bit of bite to this story. Blaine and Flynn are great guys, and while they fall into bed rather quickly, they make a great couple. Their complimentary “ghost skills” also come in handy, and I am definitely looking forward to more of their adventures.
If you like your romances on the spooky side, if you want to watch two men deal with paranormal phenomena that have a very real impact on their lives, and if you’re looking for a read that is suspenseful, mysterious, and just this side of too scary, then you will probably like this novel.
