Michele “Micky” Knight, a New Orleans PI, meets an out-of-town team of investigators who are working a human trafficking case. They want someone local to show them around. It sounds easy, and a woman with smiling green eyes is asking. But it stays easy only if Micky stops asking questions—and she’s never been good at that. What starts out as a tourist tour of the underside of New Orleans turns into a risky game of cat and mouse, and twists even further as Micky is caught between the good guys and the bad guys, each willing to do whatever it takes—including getting rid of an inconvenient PI—to achieve their ends. Who can she trust? And who’s trying to kill her?
The eighth Micky Knight mystery.
"...But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,..." Macbeth, Act 1, Scene 7
This is the first time I am reading a 'Micky Knight Mystery' Series' book and I find myself in an interesting mix of undercover and mainstream New Orleans settings, with darkness seeping through on all fronts, plus indeterminate subterfuge. Then, there is a healthy dollop of sex for the main character as she mixes with both operatives not really knowing which one is the baddy! I generally like detail especially about arenas I have never been to or new people I have not read about, but even I felt a tad overwhelmed by the narrative. However, that just slowed things down a bit and in the end, it actually made the finale sweeter and curiously understandable. I give this book a thumbs up with encouragement to stay the course and thoroughly enjoy the outcome! I suppose I better read up on Micky's previous adventures, too!
Michelle Knight is a card-carrying private investigator with a license to carry. I have a big fondness for female PIs and Micky didn't disappoint me. She is currently dealing with a breakup from a long-term relationship and that sorrow permeates her life and pops up at the most curious instances. However, with many years of experience under her belt, this personal sorrow does not slow her down and, more importantly, she hasn't lost her PI edge. She lives and works in New Orleans, but was brought up on the Bayou. That little bio tidbit serves her well as she gathers some rather fine intel when revisiting her birthplace. Micky picks up and deciphers really good intel all over the place. I completely and totally adored her!
Ashley West introduces herself to Micky as head of a team working on a joint operation to uncover a human trafficking ring. She introduces herself as from ICE, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She mentions that the FBI, Secret Service, DEA, and ATF are involved, too. She is quite taken with Micky's observational skills. Ashley and Micky get real personal, really fast. Micky finds herself very taken with Ashley.
Two other people are really delicious characters in this story. FBI agent Emily Harris and Celeste, a very high class madam with very fine connections as needed. Micky's interactions and dealings with both these ladies added some wonderful extra moments and complications. Things get rather strange and highly volatile as this story proceeds. I tip my hat to the author, J.M. Redmann, for completely flooring me with the finale. Hopefully, my admission will really encourage folks to stay the course. Once again... Thumbs up!
