Ryan's finally home after a long week of hiding in a hotel while his boyfriend's parents visited. He isn't happy that Jordan hasn’t told his parents he’s gay but believes Jordan when he promises to come out. When Jordan’s family ends up on their doorstep after a winter storm shuts down the airport, Jordan introduces Ryan as his roommate, leaving Ryan horrified and hurt. Jordan’s little sister notices and tells Ryan she’s going to ask Santa to make him happy… but does Ryan’s Christmas wish have any hope of coming true?
This story, as hilarious and humorous as it is, still manages to get across a message of acceptance and love that is quite Christmas-y. It doesn’t start out too well, with Ryan having been banned from the apartment he shares with Jordan, his boyfriend of eight months. Jordan isn't out and he has his family coming for a pre-Christmas visit, so what choice do they have? The situation is crazy, but I bet lots of couples "in hiding" will know exactly what that feels like. The rest of the story is as crazy as the setup, but luckily, there is hope as well.
Ryan made me laugh. He is relieved to be back home, and determined to make this a memorable evening for Jordan once his boyfriend returns from dropping his family off at the airport. A romantic dinner has to be part of that, but he is about as talented in the kitchen as I am. Which means: not at all! His desperate attempts to slice vegetables (cutting his finger, of course) and get the oven to work were hilarious. The romantic gift he has for Jordan was very touching.
Jordan is torn between wanting to tell his family and being scared to death they will hate him. When he calls Ryan his roommate, he made me cringe and Ryan angry and sad. Luckily this is a Christmas story and I was holding on to the hope all would therefore have to end well. Jordan himself may have taken a little long to get there, but I could see his struggle and was willing to bear with him.
If you like stories that will make you laugh out loud, if you enjoy reading about someone else's family drama (since that always seems more amusing than our own), and if you're looking for a heartwarming, romantic story that doesn't take itself too seriously, you will probably like this one a lot.
