Robby Fletcher had a lot of things to be ashamed of, but being assaulted by his oldest brother and his pals wasn’t one of them. It’s been going on for years, but after one beating too many, Robby has finally had enough.
When he learns that Moose is in danger, Robby wants to protect his brother for once, and that means going to Cade Creek to warn him that Billy is out for revenge. But nothing ever comes easy for Robby. He barely has time to step foot in Cade Creek before he’s running for his life.
Gus Fletcher knew something was wrong the second three rough-looking guys stepped inside his feed and seed store. He knew they were after something, and he was determined they wouldn’t get it, especially when he discovered the frightened man hiding under his desk.
Between misunderstandings, the danger from Billy and his cohorts, and trying to help Robby and Moose mend their relationship, falling in love seems easy. But finding the right time for it is almost impossible.
As awful as emotional and physical abuse is, I find the tendency for victims to defend their abusers, or to “justify” their actions, at least as difficult to understand. My heart broke for Moose in the last book: he was made to “earn” money in cage fights, beaten up by his father and older brother, Billy, and when he finally escapes, his younger brother Robby decides to stay behind. Why??? He knows that he will be next, and yet, for some reason he seems to think he will escape the same fate.
Now, at the beginning of ‘The Right Time for Us’, it becomes obvious he is in as much danger as Moose used to be – maybe more. It takes him being beaten half to death and Moose being threatened by Billy, before Robby finally manages to tear himself away. Robby makes it to Cade Creek, but as soon as he’s there, Billy and two thugs catch up with him. Only quick thinking and finding a hiding place save him and, as it turns out, make him walk right into his rescuer’s arms.
Gus owns the Cade Creek feed and seed store, Moose works for him, and when three thugs show up to look for Moose and the man he suspects is hiding under his desk, Gus denies knowing any of them and manages to get rid of the strangers. But that is by no means the end of it. First, Robby needs help and Gus is determined to get it for him, no matter what. And second, he falls for Robby faster than possible in real life, and all they need to figure out is how to deal with Gus’s somewhat kinky desires and when to find the time to actually get to know each other. Once Gus stops feeling guilty for what he wants, that is.
But the men after Robby are persistent and very dangerous. Even with the help of most of the people in Cade Creek, Robby and Gus are in trouble almost from the word go. They have each other, but they need to learn to communicate and build some trust between them before they can get anywhere.
If you want to find out how the people of Cade Creek are doing and how they help Robby and Gus, just like they’ve helped Moose and Cory, if you like whirlwind insta-love romances with a large side of danger and suspense, and if you’re looking for a sweet read with a wonderful happy ending, then you will probably like this novella.
