Talk about pressure when trying to discover the location of an ancient “something” – an item or location that could be anything from an artifact to a building or maybe none of the above. Professor Fathom and his team of heroic adventurers had their hands full in the first book, enough for me to believe it couldn’t get any worse, but boy, was I wrong! Their nemesis, Professor Perron, is back and this time he has got them by the jugular from the very start by using a slow-acting poison to threaten the life of an innocent young man who is close to Jake’s heart. With settings ranging from the arctic cold of Siberia to the hot and humid Amazon jungle, the team’s attempts to either find an antidote or discover the mysterious Riddle of the Sands (aka the Lost Pyramid of Imhotep) that the evil professor demands, had me breathless and turning the pages from the first moment.
The five members of the professor’s team really come into their own in this second book. Partly this is because I got to know them during their first adventure and have a better idea what each of them is about, but I think the bigger part is because Geoffrey Knight spent some time on adding depth to each of the characters. Action is his preferred way of doing this, and considering what they all get up to and involved in, it was a great way to not only show off their talents, but to keep me entertained as well.
Each member of the team sets out with a certain goal, but all of them struggle and it turns out that nothing much will be achieved without them working together – which is exactly what I expected. It was still marvelous to see “the plan” come together and watch the team dismantle one riddle after another while fighting off attempts on their lives. But not everything goes as smoothly as they hope, especially in the relationship department. I guess there is a lot more to come…
If you like multilayered quests with ever increasing stakes, if you want to watch five young men work together in their mission to save a life, and if you’re looking for a read that contains cleverly hidden clues, multiple disappointments, tough challenges, and scorching hot interludes, then you will probably like this suspenseful, action-packed novel as much as I do. Bring on the next volume!
