When Madison “Matty” Ward finds himself out of work and without a place to live, his cousin comes through with a job on the Gates cattle ranch. Despite not knowing anything about herding cattle or taking care of horses, Matty does his best to impress the older hunky foreman, Baxter Hollingsworth. Baxter is drawn to the new young hand, but he’s deeply closeted, and after an openly gay veterinarian shows he’s interested in Matty, Baxter’s repressed feelings lead to an explosive encounter. Baxter then withdraws—leaving Matty feeling angry and used—until an accident forces him to confront his fears.
There are a lot of people in this world who are naturally willing to help someone down on their luck. That's the case for Matty and his job at the Gates's ranch. Matty knows nothing about ranching but they hire him, sight unseen, and make him part of the family. This family includes a ranch foreman whom Matty can't keep his eyes off of and who could blame him? A man in boots and riding a horse is a mighty appealing sight.
Matty grew up with his aunt and cousin after his mom died of cancer. After quitting his full time job to stay at home and care for his aunt who has the same cancer his mom had, it becomes too much and he and his cousin put her in a facility. With no job and no home anymore, his cousin gets him the job at the ranch where he works. Now, this might be a live and let live community but Matty still has to be careful as some people might not appreciate him showing interest. Matty is feisty, though, and has no problem standing up for himself.
Of course, Baxter, the ranch foreman, isn't "some people" but he is heavily closeted and, apparently, gets his male fix anonymously in rest stop bathrooms. Matty is far outside Baxter's experience and Baxter doesn't know how to handle Matty or his own desires. At forty-four to Matty's twenty-seven they're worlds apart in life knowledge, or so Baxter thinks. When the handsome, and gay, veterinarian comes looking around at Matty, Baxter has to put up or shut up.
This was a good story. A fairly predictable and simple storyline, but done well. The writing style had me caring about the characters and wanting them to get their happy ever after. If you like cowboys, horses, and mucking stalls, then this might be for you.
