Ash is in a bad mood. His alpha husband is a little too protective, and it's getting in the way of their sex life.
Dakota lost his first mate in childbirth, and though Ash seems healthy and willing enough, Dakota doesn't want to take the risk, no matter how much his alpha side wants it.
When hunters try to kidnap Ash, Dakota goes into alpha mode to make them pay. He cannot hold himself back anymore. He needs to touch his mate, to hold Ash and confirm that he is alive and well, but the hunters are not done. They're coming for what they want, and they have another alpha luna werewolf to help them take it. It looks like they'll do anything to study a pregnant werewolf, including sending an all-out attack on the house where they live, sending Ash into premature labor while Dakota is battling for their lives and cannot help his mate give birth.
This series is getting better and more exciting by the book! I thought the previous volume was great with new pack members Jesse and Frank joining Dakota’s pack, but ‘The Protective Wolf’ topped it in more than one way. First, there is Ash who is kidnapped by hunters, barely returned before the next attack, and ends up in premature labor. Second, there is the continuation of what-I-think is a forming mate bond between Eddie and Brian, but the revelations about Brian turn the situation extremely problematic. And third, as if that weren’t enough, there is a twist in the final chapter that had me reeling. It links this series to the original ‘Luna Werewolves’ series in a highly creative and unexpected way and I can’t wait to see where Marcy Jacks takes this!
I liked Ash and Dakota since the first book, and following them throughout the last few stories has been fun. Ash is now so heavily pregnant that he has trouble imagining it will be another few weeks until he can give birth – he wants it to be now. The hunters attack and kidnap him, Dakota manages to rescue him, and the last thing he needs is another attack. But the hunters are relentless, and all the excitement during the next attack makes Ash go into labor – while Dakota is out hunting their attackers down. What a mess!
Dakota has some serious issues to deal with. The house and small pack he leads are difficult to defend, his mate is about to give birth, and he knows that his claws do not produce the venom needed to help an omega give birth safely. He lost his first mate and child that way, and he is terrified that it will happen again. The pressure gets to him more each day, and the fact that he can’t do anything plus all the attacks make him extremely aggressive. It’s not easy to be an alpha, that’s for sure!
If you want to know how Ash and Dakota are doing and see their baby born, if you like a more than healthy dose of excitement with your mpreg stories, and if you’re looking for a read that is as suspenseful and exciting as it is surprising, then you will probably like this novella.
