Styx Randall has high hopes for his job interview with Rescue for Hire West. The idea of spending his days fixing the high powered planes and vehicles for the company is his idea of heaven. When he meets Flyer Wakefield, he adds the pilot to his list of wants in life, with want soon turning into need. But why is the nervous man’s phone ringing constantly? Styx finds out the first time he takes Flyer into his arms and discovers his scarred body.
Flyer accepts that he can’t sit still. He knows if he doesn’t keep eating he’ll wind down like a toy top. What he doesn’t understand is why his sadistic ex-boyfriend won’t leave him alone. Meeting the big, bad mechanic should send Flyer running for the hills, and yet the attraction is undeniable. Flyer finds strength and healing in Styx’s arms, but will that be enough when his ex-boyfriend kidnaps Flyer and some of his teammate’s partners?
I have been seriously looking forward to Flyer's story ever since I met him. I had a sneaking suspicion the instant I saw his jitteriness (except while he's flying) that something bad had happened in his past. He also eats constantly with an insanely high metabolism, and part of me wanted to hate him for it but I couldn't. I just wanted to comfort and protect Flyer, and see him get the happiness he deserves.
Styx sucked me (and Flyer) in from the get-go. His childhood abuse, his accomplishments as a Navy SEAL, only to have another team take issue with him being gay and injuring him in a way that that career was over, made me want to take care of him, also. I was faced with two strong, yet vulnerable men, who had a serious instant attraction, and a desperate need for each other they didn't know how to deal with.
Oh Flyer. The more I learned about his childhood, his dad, and the reasons why he'd been so easy for Sammie, his ex, to prey on just made my heart hurt for him. Flyer sees himself as weak instead of as a strong man who has survived. Unfortunately, the way he views himself is what prevents him from going to Roman and telling him his ex still contacts him. I think all abusers need to have their heads handed to them for the destruction they cause.
I'm sorry, Garret and Tolliver, but Styx and Flyer have replaced you as my favorites. So far. I loved their story! I wish the ending had been a little longer in terms of the kidnapping and rescue although I can't complain when everyone made it out alive except for the evil troll, Sammie. I'm really looking forward to the next book as I'm fairly sure I know who is featured.
