Bailey occasionally fills in as a substitute bartender at his friend's airport bar as a favor. He strikes up a conversation with Curt, a professor on his way to a family Thanksgiving in Chicago. They hit it off, and make plans to meet up after the holiday, but when the flight is delayed and then canceled, Bailey jumps at the chance to move up the timetable. He invites Curt back to his place for a drink and more, but he has the feeling this is more than a one-night stand. Will Curt feel the same?
Sometimes a cancelled flight, while still causing misery, doesn’t have to be all bad. Curt finds out when snow at his destination means he can't make it to his parents' for Thanksgiving. Bailey, the bartender whose number he got before making his way to the gate, ends up making the change in plans bearable, even fun.
Curt is still very young for being a professor of physics, and he is pleasantly surprised when the bartender at the airport seems to enjoy him talking about gamma radiation and supernovae. It isn’t every day the person he tells about his job doesn’t "fall asleep" so to speak. They end up exchanging numbers but have no idea their plans will materialize much sooner than they thought.
Bailey is only helping out at a good friend's bar on the evening before Thanksgiving, and he enjoys his temporary return to being a bartender. It's a lot more interesting than his current job of software tester, albeit not as well-paid. He loves listening to Curt talk about his job, so the offer to give him a lift home is no hardship. Not that they end up at Curt's home, but Bailey isn’t about to complain about having a good-looking man in his bed for the night.
If you like stories about tentative first encounters that turn into hot first encounters, if men who make the best of changed circumstances make you smile, and if you're looking for a quick, entertaining read with a touch of Thanksgiving spirit, then you will probably enjoy this short story.
