On Halloween the reaper Eric Storm returns to a secluded house in the woods. Contained within its walls is the one night he chooses to relive every year. Timothy Fields is the man that stole his heart and because of a fateful accident, the one person he can't be with, except for those few precious hours on the last day of the tenth month.
This story is also included in Haunted Hotties Volume I Anthology.
Anyone who follows my reviews knows that bittersweet - or heaven forbid, tragic - stories are not my preference. There are exceptions, however, and ‘The Last Night’ turned out to be one of them. Don’t get me wrong, the story is still bittersweet, and the ending did make me cry, but the idea of Eric having at least one night a year of happiness was curiously reassuring. And since I knew what to expect based on the blurb, at least the tragedy of his situation was not a nasty surprise.
The story itself is well written, with Eric enjoying everything that happens with all his senses. The fate of a reaper is cruel enough, but for him to have lost the one man he loves takes away all enjoyment in his life – if that is what you can call his existence. Every moment of reliving that evening is overshadowed by tragedy, and even though his interactions with Timothy – or rather Eric’s recollection of them - are loving and very sensual, the knowledge of what happened taints the entire experience to some degree. Very well done!
If you like bittersweet stories, if tragic main characters are your thing, and if you’re looking for a sensual read seen through the eyes of a man who knows he has lost his lover, then you might like this shot story.
