When gifts mysteriously appear on his doorstep, Ben is intrigued despite his dislike of the holidays. Their trail leads him to John--an odd yet sexy man, who brings more to Ben’s life than he ever dared imagine.
Ben has a best friend, a cranky cat, and a job he enjoys. He is satisfied with life, or so he tells himself. But John disrupts everything Ben thought he knew, taking him on an emotional adventure that stirs up his past and challenges everything he planned for his future.
Some people have no reason to love the holiday season. In the case of the main characters of this story, both men have had bad experiences with their families. But it’s interesting how Ben has let that turn him into a total Scrooge in December, and a hermit during the rest of the year, whereas John has a sunny disposition and doesn’t let anything get him down. Their story is one of revelations, self-doubt, and a dawning realization that there is no reason to let the past decide their futures. In short, this is a story about hope.
Ben is not very sociable during the year, but he is particularly determined to ignore the holidays and anyone who celebrates. He hates that he is the same way as his father, who always said the holidays were a waste of time, but he can’t seem to change it. This year, the mysterious packages that keep appearing on his doorstep make it very difficult not to feel some excitement. When he figures out who delivered them and confronts the man to find out who he is, the stranger called John doesn’t immediately let the cat out of the bag. He insists on getting to know Ben better, which turns out well and proves there is a lot of chemistry between them. But John was right to be careful. As soon as the truth emerges, Ben runs for the hills, and I have to say I understand why.
The emotional roller coaster and journey of self-discovery that follows as Ben slowly begins to unravel parts of his past he had forgotten is fascinating. Ben’s realization that John of all people is one of the few who can understand and maybe help him shocks Ben into contacting John again – only to find John battling his own version of hell. It seems that Fate had a reason to bring them together…
If you like stories with a mystery that leads to secrets whose unveiling lead to unexpected discoveries and revelations, if two men with similar backgrounds coming to opposite conclusions sound interesting, and if you’re looking for a read full of shock, gradual acceptance, and discoveries of passion, then you will probably like this novella.
