Thirty-three-year-old technical writer Laurence Hart is a modern-day Scrooge when it comes to the holiday season—and the rest of the year too. He doesn’t like most people, they don’t like him, and he’s happy to keep it that way. Over lunch with his best friend, he receives a fortune cookie promising him true love. The next day, forced to work on a holiday charity committee or lose his job, he meets Nick, a jolly ginger giant who loves all things Christmas. Together they face numerous obstacles to put together a holiday fair to raise money for children in foster care in only four days. While Laurence has to mend his curmudgeonly ways to make the event a success, Nick’s holiday magic might mend Laurence’s heart.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Advent Calendar "Bah Humbug."
Scrooges don’t have it easy around Christmas – what with everyone else all happy about the holidays. Laurence, a technical writer, is a special case who has it even worse – he doesn’t really like people the rest of the year either. Of course, when he gets paired up with a guy who loves Christmas, they have to find a way to make it work, and the result is a very sweet Christmas romance. I enjoyed watching every single step of Laurence and Nick defining their own personal way forward.
Laurence is not exactly a model worker. He’s had some disciplinary issues before, and having to participate in a holiday charity committee is his “punishment”. As much as he tries to get out of it, he has no choice if he wants to keep his job. His initial resistance is high, but Nick is a determined leader who soon convinces him that helping raise money for children in foster care is a worthwhile endeavor. It’s still a tough project and there are many obstacles, but the longer the two men work together, the closer they get… and the more I was convinced I was getting to watch a true Christmas miracle.
If you like sweet romances in unexpected places, if you love watching a Scrooge see the error of his ways, and if you’re looking for a read that is entertaining, sweet, and has a very happy ending, then you will probably like this novella.
