The heart remembers.
When Aidan Bishop staggers out of the woods, naked and suffering from amnesia, he needs to relearn who he is and where he fits in the world.
His boss, nearly five-hundred-year-old dragon Nassim, head of a successful tech company, hurries to claim his wayward assistant and guide him back into the life he disappeared from. As they get to know each other again, Aidan wonders if their relationship went deeper than employer and employee. But Nassim isn’t telling, and Aidan has a secret of his own… even if he doesn’t know it yet.
First edition published by Dreamspinner Press, October 2019.
What started in book one of the ‘Golden Kingdom’ series with a remarkable love story between two gryphon shifters and was set in an unusual shifter world, is continued in this second book with a tale that is just as fascinating, suspenseful, and full of secrets. This time the focus is on Aidan, a young man who emerges naked from the woods without a single memory about who he is. His boss is the enigmatic CEO of a tech company, a dragon shifter, and a man who is clearly more than interested in Aidan. How does all this fit together? You are in for quite a ride if you want to find out.
Aidan may have no idea who he is or what his place in the world is, but he has principles and a very clear idea about what is right and what is wrong. It was fascinating to see him struggle with figuring out who he is, where he came from, and what his life was like before he lost his memory. His relationship with his boss is particularly interesting, and watching him slowly understand what they mean to each other was totally charming. As to what was really going on with Aiden’s life and the cause of his amnesia? I would have never guessed and the author left me in suspense until almost the end of the book. Very well done!
Nassim, in many ways, is a typical dragon. He is powerful, demanding, and very jealously guards his hoard. Though it was a nice surprise as to what it is that he “collects” and guards with such alacrity – I loved that part of the worldbuild as much as the rest of this creative story. Nassim does an excellent job hiding what he knows – almost too good for Aiden to ever stand a chance to find out the truth. Nassim doesn’t intend to hurt Aiden with his reticence, but he is a little too “thorough” for my taste and as a consequence, almost loses it all.
If you like suspenseful thrillerlike fairy tales in a modern setting, if two men dealing with their past (one without knowing what it is) are your thing, and if you’re looking for an engrossing story with amazing characters and a wonderful ending, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. I can’t wait to find out if there will be another story set in this supernatural world ruled by gryphon shifters!
