Book Review
I have been sucking down these 'End Street Detective Agency' stories because I, literally, can't get enough of them. They're funny, a little sexy, a lot intriguing, and can be suspenseful, too. As far as I am concerned they're exactly what is needed when I want something easy but really good. Sam and Bob never fail to amuse, along with all of the other great secondary characters.
Ever since Sam re-opened his dead uncle's detective agency, there's been a hulking, stone gargoyle sitting on the edge of his uncle's desk. It's not until Sam ends up being a halfway house for familiars looking for their true masters and a gargoyle shows up, that Sam discovers "his" gargoyle isn't really a gargoyle but some kind of other. But what? Sam finds a digital camera in his uncle's closet but instead of taking normal photos, it shows you the person's soulmate next to them in the picture. Imagine Sam's surprise when he snaps a pic of a guy he's investigating, only to find his gargoyle in the photo with him.
"He continued talking to the fae. “This case concerns a man, and we think you may know him, or know of him.” Sam held out the photo and turned it around so the three fae could look at the candid shot. What happened next kind of surprised him. Well, in hindsight he shouldn’t have been surprised at all. He woke up in a cell."
Once Sam, Bob, Smudge, and the gargoyle end up in the fae queen's prison, Sam's funky magic turns the gargoyle, temporarily, back into his fae self. Hal tells them that he loved the fae prince and the queen cursed him because she found him not worthy. He will turn back again in three days unless they can get the purple pearl to reverse the curse. And who has the purple pearl? Why, the sirens, of course. I knew I'd see them again.
Oh boy. The sirens are the least of Sam's problems when he discovers what the fae triad did to him. As a human hybrid, Sam is more than unique, or even special. He is one-of-a-kind and now the triad claim he is… oh wait, I'm not telling. Huge spoiler. Huge. Just believe me when I say that the more Sam becomes embroiled in the paranormal world, the more his powers increase and his essence glows brighter.
Loved, loved, loved this case. I'm running out of adjectives to describe how much fun I'm having reading this series. I really wasn't happy with the authors giving me such a scare about Bob. Don't do that again. Please. The ending was beautiful and sad, although finding out who Bob's brother, Ettore, is was a shock, but not as big of a one as what Ettore sacrificed for his brother. Yowza. Now I can't wait to read Ettore's story.
