Keeping a sex demon happy and well fucked is always the safest option, even if you have your own relationship issues. When saving the world on a regular basis, a happy home is very important.
Cy’s job as an apocalypse stopper isn’t an easy one at the best of times, but with the help of his weird family, he survives. Sure, he sneaks out every once and a while to watch August his sex demon feed, but he loves and is committed to Patrick, his fae prince lover, even if it means giving up the anal penetrative sex he loves and Patrick has issues with.
All adult relationships are based on compromise. It's just that most don’t require fucking a sex demon to keep him alive and non-murder-y at the same time as you're trying to quit your job to save the world on your own time.
Much like the prequel (‘Cy Gets a Sex Demon’), this novel is a wonderfully mysterious story with a lot of cloak-and-dagger secrecy, plans within plans, and deception on so many layers that I found myself involved and entangled until the very last page. Cy again tells the story in first person, but I was a little more familiar with who he is and what he is trying to achieve than the first time around. I can only recommend reading the prequel first – I’m not sure I would have been able to follow the story without having read it. Different from the prequel, Cy has been in a relationship with his full-fae boyfriend Patrick for five years, but to call it dysfunctional is probably trying to be nice. Cy also has a more-than-acquaintance-level relationship with the sex demon August whom he rescued from the clutches of his power-hungry boss. The focus of this novel is on the three men trying to figure out how to relate to each other, on Cy trying to figure out how he can get out of having his soul signed away for eternity, and all three attempting to solve the mystery of the sex demons suddenly being unable to feed.
Cy has been moved to a more supervisory role, and is no longer working as an assassin for hire. He is now in charge of stopping various apocalypses (and yes, apparently there is more than one). The fact that his boss still sends him into the field on a regular basis, and that he is close to getting killed as often as not, makes Patrick very suspicious. He wants Cy to quit his job and thinks it can be done. Cy doesn’t believe that is possible, and the ensuing fights are epic. One thing is certain: Patrick and Cy are very much in love despite the fact that they have trouble relating on a day-to-day basis, and never mind the fact that Cy needs to have some form of sex with August to keep him alive now that all his other sources of nourishment have dried up.
What follows Patrick’s demands to stop working for a boss who doesn’t like him very much, is an action-packed adventure with escalating threats to Cy’s life, sex demons who are out of control since they are starving by the hundreds, and fae court political machinations that may be in the background for much of the book, but turn out to be central to the whole issue of Cy, Patrick, and August figuring out how to survive. I loved all the revelations, the plans-within-plans, and secrecy as much as the two men figuring out what was really important to them.
If you like main characters who fight doom on a daily basis, if a secretive mission to save the world as well as their relationship sounds like fun, and if you’re looking for a read that is not realistic but contains great supernatural fun and hot man-on-fae and man-on-sex demon action, then you will probably like this novel. I think it’s a hoot!
