Antonio, a California seminarian meets the man of his dreams during a walking tour of Spain. Little does he know…handsome Zeb is a storm demon.
Each year thousands of people make a spiritual journey called The Camino, an ancient walk through Europe, crisscrossing through France, Portugal and Spain. For two very different men, the trip has special dangers and, attractions. Antonio is one step away from becoming a transitional deacon, the final step before becoming a priest, but feels his new-found desire for other men violates his chosen vocation.
His nighttime dreams reveal a man he is passionate about, but to his amazement, he looks just like Zeb, a very handsome, mysterious man who is questioning things in his own life. How can Antonio be in love with someone who worships evil? And why is Zeb walking the path of The Camino?

‘The Camino’ is a very special book in more ways than one. It is about the courage to go look for what’s missing in your life, about honesty with yourself once you find it, and, of course, as always with A.J.’s books, about love and how it can change and improve the lives of those who are open to it. This story talks about one man’s life-altering experience, but there is something in it for all of us to identify with. Above all, unlike so many books about life-changing events, this one doesn’t preach. It just tells it as it is, for this one guy, and leaves us to draw our own conclusions.
Antonio is like all of us, really. He has his goals, in his case he wants to become a priest, and makes progress toward them, but has never really thought about what he is after. His dreams about finding true love are an indication of what he longs for – but he ignores them and pushes them away, since they are in conflict with what he thinks he should want. Sound familiar? Thank God he decides to walk The Camino. I loved accompanying him as he experiences one eye-opening event after another.
Jeb is an enigma at first and, to a certain degree, remains one until the end. A storm demon, his story is heartbreaking and I won’t go into any details here so I don't spoil the surprise. But let me tell you, when he starts opening up – you better have the tissues ready.
If you have ever thought about doing something out of the ordinary, about getting up and exploring the world (whether on an ‘official’ Camino, or by making your own way), read this book. It is absolutely beautiful!
