Book Blurb

The Kingdom of Askara has been torn apart by conflict for centuries, where humans exist as subservient beings to their werewolf masters. Legend says it will only be able to heal itself when an Alpha King and a pure omega are mated and crowned together, but a pure omega hasn’t been born in over a thousand years.

Luca is an Alpha-heir eagerly awaiting the choosing ceremony on his twenty-fifth birthday and the gifts granted by whichever omega he mates. His small pack is destitute due to the decisions of its ruling council, but being only an Alpha-heir, he has no authority to challenge them. Not until now—this moment he has waited a long time for.

Kit grew up as a street-rat, an unlicensed human who would never be more than a slave for whichever master owns him. Then one day he came across a young Alpha-heir, attacked and dying of poison, and found out their fates were suddenly entwined.

Luca needs to take over his pack and save his people. He cannot afford to be distracted. But when he meets Kit, he develops abilities indicating he is not just a pack Alpha, but the King his world has needed for a thousand years.
Is Kit really the cause of Luca’s newfound power, the true mate he needs? How is it possible when the young man isn’t even a werewolf, and as merely a human, a mating is not only forbidden, but for Kit, a sentence of death?

Book Review

I am normally not interested in high fantasy stories but 'The Alpha King' is so much more than that. I adore this author and I knew the world building, the romance, the action/adventure, and the intrigue would keep me enthralled to the very end. I was fascinated by the concept of a world run by werewolves where humans, for the most part, are slaves, and a result of humans warring with each other to such an extreme that werewolves rose up and took over more than a thousand years before. The legend of the Alpha King and the pure omega who will give him his powers brought me hope that Luca and Kit could heal their world, together.

“It’s Kit, your Highness,” he whispered, and before Luca could stop him he fell to his knees, and bowed his head.
Luca ignored the gasps around him and bent down quickly, reaching for Kit’s arms. “I’m not...” He started in confusion, then Kit looked up.
“I told you once,” he said softly. “You are the true Alpha King.”

One of the things that resonated so strongly with me as I was reading, were the similarities to my own country's political disaster that has occurred this past year and I wouldn't be surprised if the author had been somewhat influenced by it. Luca is young, at only twenty-five when werewolves can easily live to be three hundred, and his view of many of their archaic customs is far different from that of his elders. Luca wants to unite his country, bring the territories back together, and eliminate the crueler practices that revolve around humans and slavery. He isn't weak, not at all, but there are many who view him as such in the beginning.

There is so much going on right after Luca and Kit mate, and Luca is identified as the Alpha King. Unfortunately, Luca gets caught up in being king, Kit is left alone and feels useless, Luca misinterprets an innocent scene, and well… men will be men, so Luca does something stupid and almost loses his soul-mate. Even though they get everything straightened out, the two of them still face betrayals at almost every turn and have only a small handful of people they can trust. As with most men throughout history, Luca and Kit severely underestimated what a pissed-off female can do, and dealing with that isn't easy.

I loved the way the humans and wolves began to come together in harmony. At least the humans in Luca's pack and territory, who had experienced the huge differences in Luca's leadership style versus the previous wolves the humans had endured. It made me giggle as they were on their way to the capital city for Luca to make his claim as Alpha King, and a bunch of the human males in their group are giving Kit advice about being pregnant based on their own wives' experiences. It was very sweet in a way and I loved seeing the difference Luca and Kit were already making to their people.

I don't know whether it was fate or not, but Luca becoming the Alpha King and having a pure omega human mate in Kit, was exactly what Askara so desperately needed. A faction of humans calling themselves The Human Alliance has arisen and is determined to overthrow the werewolves as rulers. It is even worse than Luca had known, particularly when he discovers some of the practices used in other territories against human children, and he vows to bring peace back to their kingdom no matter what.

"The trouble was that between the human rebels and the werewolves from Niandes, everyone was out to get them."

This was, by far, one of the most fascinating novels I've read this year. I fell in love with Luca and Kit, plus quite a few marvelous secondary characters. The birth was beautifully done and realistic enough to satisfy anyone who loves mpreg. I was very pleased with the ending even though it didn't come as a complete surprise. In fact, the only thing I didn't like was that the story ended a little too abruptly for me, but I guess I'm picky!
