Jared Winters’s life has been little more than a collection of moments where he didn’t think before opening his mouth. Always a bit different, he’s learned to accept an existence on the outside looking in. But one day, his mouth lands him in a position that nearly costs him his life. Only the timely intervention of Sophie, his twin Conner’s ex-girlfriend, saves him.
Siblings Sophie and Donovan Carrigan step in and offer support, comfort, and a place to call home. Under their care, Jared begins to heal and learns to trust just enough to act on his attraction to Donovan. He just hopes it’s worth the risk.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2014 Daily Dose package "Mended".
Overall and on balance, this is a really feel-good story. Maybe some of the hard to swallow and feel wretched about stuff is sometimes needed to make a super heartwarming ending feel oh that much better. Everything is pretty much centered around the twin who really seems to have gotten completely short-shrifted. He had all manner of deficiencies that often got him into hot water with his parents, his twin brother, and people in general. He was booted from technical school and doesn't that mean you're unteachable? I couldn't put this book down until I found out how everything finally turned out. Wonderfully!
Jared Winters has been told he is a freak and hearing that often enough will make it difficult to think otherwise about oneself. Plus, having his twin be super smart, super smooth, and super slick only makes Jared look and feel much worse in comparison. Jared often makes things even worse for himself because he cannot edit what comes out of his mouth before his foot invariably finds its way into it. Such an incident triggers one huge catastrophic series of events. Jared's family is turned inside-out from a horrid series of incidents. Things look very bleak for everyone around Jared and he barely survives. Pins and needles!
Sophie is sort of Connor's girlfriend. He is also Jared's twin. The kicker is she is pregnant by Connor and plans to have the baby. She and her brother are the most steadfast visitors and supporters of Jared during his recuperation and rehabilitation. The tangled mess that yielded the horrid circumstances is eventually unraveled for Jared by Sophie's brother Donovan. When Sophie wasn't holding Jared's hand, Donovan filled in. Sophie and Donovan also bring Jared home with them after he is released from rehab. Sophie is haunted by what she feels was her part in Jared's major recent troubles. It was all a horrendous series of errors and tempers gone wild. Sophie was really a guardian angel for Jared, plus got Jared to get to know her very hot brother! Spectacular!
I liked Jared a lot and rooted for him all the way in spite of his foot in mouth troubles, his unexpected successes, and dreams of upcoming unclehood. Sophie takes some hard knocks, but is loved, protected, and cajoled back to looking ahead toward the birth of her baby. Donovan is just such a treasure and I salute him. This was just, and I'll say it again, a fantastic feel-good story!
