David tried not to stare, but it wasn’t easy. Gorgeous Guy had a mop of dark hair, dark brown eyes that David knew he could stare into for eternity, an adorably dimpled chin, and just enough of a five o’clock shadow (it was just after noon) to give him that dangerous, bad boy look. This guy is totally out of your league, Lassen.
Then GG is gone, replaced by a little man with spectacles telling David he’s got one more opportunity to connect with the love of his life. The question is… will David take the chance?
Future A or Future B? The question is as unusual as it is weird, and David has a very hard time even accepting he has that choice. It isn’t every day that we are presented with such clear alternatives. We are as likely to miss even seeing them as David is in this story. If it weren't for the weird old man who suddenly appears and makes David look at whole is and what he wants, David would end up with a very average life, and not as happy as he could be.
David has more self-esteem issues than he realizes. Even though he meets a man who looks perfect for him, he is too tongue-tied to make anything of the opportunity. He cannot even believe he has a chance, so he gives up before he really tries. I could have kicked him, but then, not everyone is gung-ho and a risk taker. I just found myself wishing that David was even a little more courageous than he started out to be.
This story is a wonderful illustration for "nothing ventured, nothing gained. Sometimes all it takes is one little step, one moment of courage and doing something you might not ordinarily do. With the help of Chance, the temporal and dimensional matchmaker, David grows just enough to take that very small first step. I loved the ending as well – nice and open, it left me to imagine my own version of David's future.
If you like stories that make you think about your ability to influence your fate, if you enjoy short snapshots of a character's life, and if you want a read that will leave you smiling, you should give this short story a try.
