Simon has never feared the vampires who rule Valladora, yet he feels stunned and apprehensive when he meets Lord Ettore. The handsome vampire almost immediately declares that Simon is his mate, and though he knows he should feel honored, Simon can’t help resisting something that sounds impossible.
Ettore is overjoyed at finally finding his mate, even if the beautiful young man proves reluctant. Ettore is patient, enjoying the slow seduction despite his desire for Simon to give himself completely and stop holding back. When Simon disappears without a trace, Ettore doesn’t know if he should blame his political enemies or Simon’s reluctance to accept his love.
No matter what, Ettore is going to find Simon and bring him home. He knows their love is meant to be and will not rest until Simon is back in his arms, willingly offering both his blood and his heart.
Be Warned: m/m sex
Vampires set in a fantasy sort of environment, with a feudal structure and a king ruling them, yet the year is 3000-something. It makes for an interesting background for this story, where one of the princes, Ettore, finds his mate, Simon, who is "only" a servant. A great example for the slow-burning, yet very erotic romance, there is even some danger and a rescue involved before Ettore and Simon finally manage to consummate their bond.
Simon is shocked when Ettore reveals he is his mate. He has a hard time believing it is even possible for two men to mate, and has all kinds of fears about not being enough for the royal prince. While he isn't ready to make love, since he feels none in the beginning, he is very curious and finds Ettore's touch pleasurable. I thought it was great that he followed his own heart and didn’t rush into anything. It speaks of honesty, even in the face of someone he has been taught to think of as his superior in social standing.
Ettore is over two hundred years old and has looked for his mate for a very long time. He is overjoyed when he finds Simon but respects his mate's need for a slow courtship. The fact that Simon keeps treating him like a master annoys him, but the way he teaches Simon to change his mind is charming. I loved how considerate he is, especially since his patience is hard-won.
If you'd like to experience vampires in a fairy tale-like, almost Disney setting, if you enjoy the handsome prince charging in to take the poor but honest servant as his mate, and if you're looking for a story full of heat with very little sex, then you will probably like this short story.
