As punishment for what he did to Amani, Jack is forced to work at Kinky Kritters. His punishment might just end up being his salvation, though, when a hound takes an interest in him.
Jack knew he’d get in trouble for helping the police rescue Amani from the crane, but the shark never dreamed part of his punishment would be working at Kinky Kritters. The job proves to be a safe haven from the members of his shiver who would just as soon torment him for turning on them as look at him. It’s tough to endure, but Jack hopes one day they’ll grow tired of picking on him and find a new target so he can go on with his life.
Harold enjoys his work as a cop, alongside his partner Nero. When Nero starts spending more time at Kinky Kritters to be closer to Amani, it’s only natural that Harold follows along. He’s assigned to watch Jack as his punishment plays out. There’s something about the shark the hound finds interesting, and he decides to push a bit to try to find out what makes the shark tick. He’s surprised as he starts making a real connection with Jack.
I honestly have such fun reading the 'Kinky Kritters' series. Since I was currently in the middle of something very heavy, I decided I needed a quick, fun, sexy read to give me a little break and, well… 'Subduing the Shark' just leaped in to my hands. *grins*
Jack is one of the shark shiver that kidnapped Lady Leo's son, Amani, and sold him to the crane, but to give Jack credit, he's also the one who called in the anonymous tip to the police. When Jack is summoned to Kinky Kritters, he has no idea what's in store for him but he's scared. Lady Leo is not to be messed with and half of the shifter council are members of the club. So, even though the council gave Jack a slap on the wrist, Lady Leo gives him to Amani for three hours a night, every night, to perform whatever task Amani wishes.
Jack isn't a very good shark. At least, not according to the rest of his shiver. He's not a bully, he doesn't enjoy dominating people, and he would prefer to leave well enough alone. Unfortunately, Jack isn't thought too highly of by his fellow sharks and they often bully and dominate him. Violence and sex seem to be the only thing most sharks have on their mind. So being Amani's slave is somewhat of a reprieve from the tense environment of his shiver and the constant challenges where the loser has to submit to the winner for sex, regardless of choice in the matter.
Harold is a bloodhound and a cop. He's also Nero's partner so he has an active interest in seeing Amani heal from his ordeal. Harold is intrigued by Jack but he has trouble understanding the ways of sharks. The whole “challenge and loser has to have sex with the winner” thing seems an awful lot like rape to Harold. Jack just insists that Harold doesn't understand sharks. As far as Harold is concerned, hearing about these behaviors makes him not want to understand. To be honest, Jack broke my heart a little.
As I said before, Jack isn't a ruthless bully like the rest of his shiver, which is why what he does next wasn't surprising to me, but I hated the way Jack saw himself afterward. But I absolutely loved the way Harold went about convincing Jack that he was worthy regardless of what he'd done when he was with his shiver. Watching these two fall in love was a true joy and definitely showed that different species don't matter when it comes to finding the one to love.
No question about it, this is my favorite of the books so far. I adored Jack and Harold, plus learning the mindset of shark shifters was rather fascinating. 'Subduing the Shark' is sexy, smart, and very sweet. Exactly what I needed and I hope there will be more books to come.
