Sometimes Fate has a bizarre sense of humor.

Or at least it seems that way to Gus, owner of the Rainbow Room, Asheville’s main hangout for gay paranormals. He’s seen Fate catch up with the patrons of his bar while he served drinks and listened to their stories for three hundred years. He found all of it amusing, until his fated mate walks in and suddenly the twists aren’t so funny any longer!

Bear Hickes is a mage who specializes in fire, but life has lost its spark since his twin brother got married and left him alone. His older brother, Whimsy, is determined to help Bear find happiness no matter how much Bear objects, but meeting Gus gives Bear a wonderful idea: if Gus will pretend to be his boyfriend, Whimsy will get off his case. And somewhere along the line, Bear finds he wants it to be for real.

But there are secrets Gus is keeping from not just Bear, but the whole world. And when those secrets catch up with him at last, the danger won’t be just for Gus alone.

This story is set in the Asheville Arcana universe, but can be read as a standalone.

Book Review

Imagine my surprise when I realized that this ‘Magic Emporium’ novel was set in the same world as the author’s ‘Asheville Arcana’ series which I greatly enjoyed. In fact, not only is this set in the same world, but Bear is Whimsy’s younger brother and the whole Scooby gang, i.e., Arden, Eli, Whimsy, Harlan, Julian, and Thomas, are present and accounted for. Not only did I get to experience a new couple and happy ever after, but I was able to revisit old friends, so to speak.

Bear is a fire mage and having his twin brother get married and move away has made him even more of a hermit than he normally is. It’s hard. He and Elk have shared everything, practically down to their thoughts, since the day they were born, and even though Bear is happy for him it’s difficult to adjust to this new stage in his life. Because Whimsy is gloriously happy with Harlan, and wants everyone to find that same happiness, he “encourages” (kind of threatens) his brother to make him get out and be social. Ugh. Luckily for Bear he walks into Gus’s bar and they strike up a friendship and agree to fake date so Bear can get his brother off his a**.

Gus has quite a few secrets and has been alone for a long time… like, a really LONG time. I could understand his hesitation and fear at being found out but, in my opinion, and Bear’s too once he thinks about it, if Gus had been more upfront then the big bad that came looking wouldn’t have happened. So there. I enjoyed watching them fall in love and they certainly deserved the happy ever after they worked for.

If you enjoy your urban fantasy with a lot of different types of beings, two men who deserve to find each other, a barmaid with a bite, and a low angst love story, then ‘Stop Dragon My Heart Around’ might just be for you. I certainly had fun with it!
