Alpha luna werewolf Rick Castle came back from the future to warn about the destruction of his pack. He never expected to find out that his mate, the one he is destined to love and protect, was the very reason why his pack was destroyed in the first place. Now he will do anything to keep harm from coming to Cooper.
Cooper is the son of a prominent hunter. He isn't very good at his job. In fact, he hates hunting, but in order to be seen as worthy in his father's eyes, he volunteers to kill a traitor.
Cooper is taken captive by the pack he came to destroy, and it's a fate worse than death when he's mated against his will to what has to be the most handsome man in the world. The attraction is real, and so is Cooper's shame. Now Cooper wants to make amends. To the pack, and to his mate.
The various hints about a potentially devastating future keep piling up, and after the first few revelations in the previous book, this trend continues in ‘Stay With Me’. It is the first time I got to hear more from the point of view of one of the two time travelers, and with Rick having found out that Cooper is his mate, I was looking forward to finding out more. It’s not the first time in the series that a former enemy becomes a friend of the pack (Brian knows what that feels like), but Cooper is more than the first human to have to face the truth – he is also the man whose death kicked off the dramatic events that led to the almost-eradication of James and Rick’s pack in their timeline. So keeping Cooper alive, among all the other changes James and Rick have already managed to make, is a pretty essential part of their plan. The fact that Rick finds out Cooper is his mate adds a personal dimension that made it all the more urgent.
Cooper may be the son of a prominent hunter who is one of the principal enemies of Dakota’s pack, but he is one of those men who sort of drift along with what the guys around him decide. He was never determined to kill anyone, in fact he has been unable to commit murder, as he could define it. Cooper has been raised with a lot of prejudice about shifters, and he was a prisoner for weeks, but when Rick pulls him out of his confinement in the basement and Cooper begins to feel attracted to the complete stranger, he begins to reconsider his priorities.
Rick had no intention to get more involved in this timeline than absolutely necessary to save Dakota’s pack, but when he runs into Cooper and realizes the former hunter is his mate, all preconceived ideas are forgotten. Never mind that Cooper was the cause of the hunter/Luna werewolf war in Rick’s timeline, in the present, Rick will protect him with his life. He can’t even imagine returning to his timeline and not being able to take Cooper with him, just like Cooper keeps hoping that Rick can stay with him.
And then there is Cooper’s father, Bruce, who is one of the two hunters who proved deadly before. Once he finds out that Cooper is with the pack, he sets plans in motion that will ensure he gets Cooper back. Of course, killing any and all shifters around while he is at it will be part of the benefit for him. It looks as though this timeline is far from being safe unless James, Rick, and everyone in Dakota’s pack can figure out a way to defeat the hunters.
If you like enemy-to-lover stories, if time travel with all its convoluted implications is your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is suspenseful, moves the series plot forward, and has some very hot man-on-man action, then you will probably like this novella.
