Seasons of Love follows forty years in the lives of two men, Sidney Wilks and Grady Nash, from the Spring of their relationship when love is new and shiny through to the Winter of their partnership when thirty years of being a couple has begun to lose its sheen.
On the day of his mother’s funeral, ten-year old Sidney Wilks is silently comforted by the presence of one man, ranch hand Grady Nash. Little did Sidney know that Nash would become the only stable figure in his life for the next forty years.
Years later, after an evening of typical college fun, Sidney is involved in a serious car wreck. It’s Nash who once again steps in to rescue Sidney and nurse him back to health.
While trying to get close enough to Sidney to help him heal, Nash’s feelings begin to change towards the twenty-one year old. For him, loving Sidney was nothing new, but when his body begins to desire the small man, Nash is forced to re-evaluate his protective instincts.
What kind of future could the two men possibly have? Nash’s life is centred on horses and cattle, while Sidney has dreams of escaping the small-town Kansas life to build skyscrapers. How can two men who want opposite lifestyles come to a compromise, or will Nash be forced to allow Sidney to spread his wings without him?

Everyone needs a role model in their lives, someone to look up to, admire and emulate. Often that's your father, but in Carol Lynne's 'Spring', Sidney Wilk's father is cold and distant, not someone Sidney wants to imitate, even when he is very young. Try as he may, his father practically ignores him and nothing he does is good enough. Fortunately Grady Nash takes on this role and is there to nurture, protect, and love Sidney.
Nash does his best to be big brother, friend, confidant, and protector for Sidney; but as the years go by, and Sidney becomes a desirable young man, these feelings begin to change. Sidney is much less conflicted about the changes than Nash is because he's always loved him, but Nash, thinking that he can't give Sidney all he needs, pulls away from him which breaks Sidney's heart. When Sidney is in a near-fatal accident, Nash realizes that he doesn't want to do without him and starts adjusting his thinking. Almost losing Sidney makes Nash realize he can't run away from this powerful attraction that he feels toward Sidney; he tries to find a compromise that works for both of them.
I loved the way Carol used the love between the two horses, Diablo and Buckwheat, to help explain the depth of Nash's love for Sidney, expressing an intimacy that is nearly indescribable in intensity. Just as Diablo and Buckwheat are such an intrinsic part of each other, so are Sidney and Nash. Without each other, life loses its meaning. In the spring of their relationship, Sidney and Nash strike out on their life journey and, like everything fresh and new, optimism reigns. 'Spring' is an emotional roller coaster, but it is also a tender, passionate romance between two wonderful men determined to make the love that they both cherish so very much not only prevail, but thrive. I highly recommend it to anyone who believes that having love is worth the risks involved.
