Jack never saw this special delivery coming.

Jack Dawson has been madly in love with Tan Nguyen since high school. So when his oldest crush walks into his flower shop to place an order, Jack…runs into the closet to hide.

Valentine’s Day is the worst day for florists, especially lonely ones who just want a boyfriend at least a quarter as hot as Tan. Add in Jack having to hand-deliver a special romance basket for Tan’s secret date while wearing a bright red suit and he’s tempted to flee to Canada.

But, to his shock, this is going to be a February Fourteenth that Jack will never forget.

Book Review

A shy florist and his former high school crush, their unexpected encounter on Valentine’s Day ten years later, and a rather unanticipated turn of events are at the center of this story. It’s funny, bigger than life, and filled with stereotypes we all know and adore (or maybe not?), but I think it offers some comic relief for those who can’t take Valentine’s Day and its excessive commercialism too seriously. Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder, but after reading this story, I’d say that the same goes for humor. Honestly, it took me a few pages to get used to Jack’s voice and since he tells the story in first person, his point of view was the only one I had. I can see how reading this tale might rub some people the wrong way, but personally, once I got used to Jack’s “version of reality”, I found his klutziness and his almost over-the-top angst rather endearing.

Jack works hard as a florist and Valentine’s Day is the second-worst holiday (after Mother’s Day) for him in terms of work and how busy it gets. What makes it worse is having to watch all the happy couples share tokens of their affection while there is a decided lack of romance in his own life. Jealous much? Definitely! Then in walks his high school crush, one super-hot guy named Tan, only to place an order for what Jack is sure to be the love of Tan’s life. He doesn’t find out though because he flees into the stock room before he can embarrass himself.

Needless to say, there are multiple misunderstandings, several obstacles, and a few surprises as Jack deals with his feelings. The day itself does not go well with him having to do deliveries, but with his pessimistic expectations of the worst happening to him at every turn, that is to be expected. I have to admit that I was laughing at his antics more often than not and very pleasantly surprised when things – finally – took a turn for the better. Well played!

If you like Valentine’s stories that don’t take themselves too seriously, if shy, klutzy, clumsy main characters are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read where romance blindsides a very deserving young man, then you will probably like this cute little novella.
