Stealing his heart.

As a thief and a warlock, Noah survives by using his wit and charm to prey on the privileged. His dangerous criminal boss wants an enchanted dagger belonging to a family of wealthy mages, including their pampered—but handsome—son, Ben. Failing to complete the job will be hazardous to Noah’s survival.

Noah bumps into Ben at a lavish party, and as soon as they meet, the connection’s undeniable, and it goes much further than ordinary attraction. Their bond reaches into their souls, entwining and changing their magic.

Which Noah thinks he can use to get to the dagger. After all, he isn’t sure this soul bond Ben seems so obsessed with is even real.

He also doesn’t count on being caught red-handed…. Or falling in love.

Book Review

The intricacies of a society of mages and warlocks, who have magic but can’t pay to be officially trained and recognized, are at the center of this story. It turns out to be quite a complicated world with more secrets and unexpected revelations than I suspected at first glance. Criminals go up against high society, the rich and powerful are not always what they seem, there are weak and strong houses ruled by a council, and rumored soul bonds have unknown effects on the type of magic someone controls. I loved getting to know the rules of this creative and often mysterious world and think that the characters as well as the plot are extremely entertaining.

Noah is a warlock, an unlicensed mage, so not exactly part of the officially recognized world of magic. He is also a thief, and normally good at his job, but his latest task gets him into trouble – both emotionally and legally. He plans to run away only to get caught by his unmerciful boss and is soon in more danger than he has any idea what to do with. But Noah is stubborn and knows how to survive adversity, so he keeps going until he begins to understand that Ben could be more important to him than money. The bond between them promises adventure too, and exploring it and his feelings for Ben turn out to be as interesting (and far less dangerous) than doing odd jobs for a criminal mastermind.

Ben is the son of a rich and powerful family of mages, has never wanted for anything, and is refreshingly open-minded about those less fortunate than the members of his house. Ben has been looking for someone compatible with his magic, a man he will be able to have a mystical soul bond with. He is ready to stand up to his father once he has found Noah (even though he sees him as “…an unknown. A warlock. A complication more than a perfect match”), but things are far more complicated than he suspects. I admired his tenacity and ability to make things happen through perseverance and sheer force of will. Noah is by no means an easy guy to capture or to get along with, but Ben proves that he is up to the task.

Noah and Ben’s relationship is not an easy one. Noah summarizes his first encounter with Ben: “Out of all the people at the party, Noah had been dancing the best moment of his life with Number Four of his Do-Not-Engage list.” The fact that he is “only” a warlock does not help, but Ben turns out to be even more of a rebel than his reputation suggests. Both Noah and Ben learn a lot about each other’s world as they become closer and closer, and as difficult as their liaison is when looked at by anyone else, both of them soon understand the soul bond is real. Exploring what they can do with it takes some time, and I enjoyed every second!

If you like romances with lots of magic, secrets, and a less-than-stellar start, if you want to watch two men battle preconceptions and each other as they fall in love, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read filled with action, secrets, revelations, controversy, and lots of very hot loving, then you will probably like this novel.
