It’s amazing how a single word from a tiny girl can change your life.

Spencer Thomas’s world turns upside down when his beloved Nell dies and leaves custody of her three-year-old daughter to him. Her “Spenna” comes when Sophie needs him most, but his boyfriend, Aaron, can’t be a parent. He just can’t. Neither of them expected a baby to fall into the lives they’d finally just settled.

When Nell’s ex comes to claim Sophie, Aaron needs to make a decision: man up or walk away as Spencer faces the fight of his life.

Book Review

I was very pleased when I heard that JP Barnaby was going to write the final installment in her incredible 'Survivor Stories' series before she retired. Considering I cried while reading the acknowledgements, I had a pretty good idea of what the author had in store for me. I am glad, in some ways, that this is going to be the final story, as this series has taken me to the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

From a purely theoretical perspective, I understood Aaron's reasoning for not wanting children. So many things can happen while raising a child and Aaron couldn't handle that load of responsibility. But something told me, that wasn't all of it. I suspected, based on Aaron's inner snarkiness with his own nephew, that Aaron doesn't want anyone replacing him in his parents’ home or lives, even though his bigger issues do revolve around fear. Selfish, I know, but Aaron doesn't respond to things the way another young adult his age would. Everything is still overshadowed by the trauma he endured, so when Spencer brings Sophie home, Aaron has to make a decision about actually being the adult he wants to be, instead of just paying it lip service.

"Five minutes later she was out of the house and Aaron sighed. They all thought he wasn’t capable of taking care of Sophie. It had nothing to do with that. He didn’t want to be responsible for her. Sure, half an hour while his mom went to the store, maybe. But for a lifetime? Letting her walk home alone from school where the monsters lurked? Not a fucking chance."

Watching Aaron put on his big boy pants and man up was incredible. Aaron has never been able to see his own inner strength so watching him come to some realizations made me very happy. It also became the perfect place for the author to end the series at. Thank you, Tricia, you did a beautiful job, and I will miss your writing.
