Book Review

With a fair amount of mystery around the spooky house and its somewhat weird inhabitants, this is the story of Victor who takes the position as paid companion to one David Ragingwood and ends up wondering what he's let himself in for. The atmosphere is somewhat Gothic, from the house to the odd visit Victor receives his first night there, and I really liked diving into the details of what was going on – secret passages and all.

Victor is a very polite young man sometime at the beginning of the 20th century. He is well educated, likes to read, but has no money of his own. So he accepts the position as paid companion to, what he thinks, must be a young boy. Imagine his surprise when the young boy turns out to be a very attractive young man almost his own age. Not only that, but the house and remainder of the family are not at all what he expected. During the storm that rages outside the first night he is there, he begins to uncover what is really going on in the dark, old mansion with the very sturdy wrought iron fence.

If you like slightly spooky historicals, with all the pomp and slightly stilted language they are supposed to come with, if you enjoy stories about mysteries and old houses that hide more than you'd think, and if you're looking for a short, fun read with just a touch of scary, the you will probably enjoy this short story.
