Book Blurb

A twenty-something paramedic suffering from PTSD and a failing relationship with his high school sweetheart becomes embroiled in the tragic life of a young, gay man brutally beaten, raped, and left for dead.

Kane Abel can’t help falling for his caregiver, the handsome paramedic who saves his life, but he’s resistant. The one time Kane threw caution to the wind, he was left with a wired jaw and a tracheostomy. He can’t take much more hurt. But with his attacker’s promise to return, Kane lives in a constant state of fear, and with the ever-present paramedic, arousal.

Garrett Young struggles with the question of his sexuality, unable to get Kane out of his mind even as he fights against the demise of his long-time engagement with his girlfriend Amanda. Every day is complicated by his ongoing battle with PTSD and alcoholism, compounded by his fear for Kane’s life.

Book Review

Very seldom do I come across a book that breaks my heart on the very first page, then proceeds to rip it in half as it continues. The main characters carry horrible scars—both physical and mental, and watching them struggle just to make it from one day to the next without completely falling apart made this a book I couldn't put down.

Kane Abel started his life addicted to methamphetamines, and it went downhill from there. A former hustler, he now works as a bartender in a gay bar. Lonely, he goes home with a handsome customer, and is left for dead on the stoop of his apartment building after being beaten, cut up, and raped by six men. Turns out Kane is the only survivor of a serial killer who hires homophobic men to help him brutalize his victims. A paramedic is forced to give Kane a tracheotomy in order to save his life. Having no one to help Kane after he leaves the hospital, Garrett Young—the paramedic who saved his life—volunteers to take Kane home and take care of him until Kane can do so himself.

Garrett Young is a former firefighter who became a paramedic after being trapped and severely injured in a fire. Left with severe burn scars, and a major case of PTSD that leaves him suffering from flashbacks and hallucinations, Garrett's life is slowly falling apart around him, especially after his fiancée leaves him. One night he and his partner answer a call about a severely injured victim of an apparent gay bashing. Garrett may have offered to take Kane home, but between his PTSD, his alcoholism, and trying to protect Kane from the serial killer out to finish what he started, Garrett wonders if he and Kane will make it long enough to even have a future.

If you like reading stories about two deeply scarred men finding love despite the almost insurmountable and overwhelming odds against them, and can handle the dark subjects mentioned in this book, then this is a tale you should definitely add to your library.
