Book Review

Continuing the space romp that started in ‘Retribution’, this time it is Rock’s turn to find love in the most unexpected places. He was an important secondary character in Rave and Kain’s story, but he really comes into his own here. Sela is Kain’s cousin and there was sexual tension brewing between her and Rock almost from the start of the series, but it takes the addition of Zander, a geeky scientist, for everyone to realize what’s what. The story starts with a bang – literally the explosion of Zander’s spaceship in Rock’s path – and does not let up. There is a crazy, evil man after Zander, greedy and power-hungry to the extreme, and all these elements thrown together result in quite the action-laden space adventure.

Rock is a warrior who does not hesitate to fight for what he believes is right. He is already in love with Sela, pretty much, at the beginning of the novella. But the addition of Zander confuses him – how can he be in love with two people? He knows that he is bisexual, yet a triad is not an easy situation to manage. I don’t blame him for his reluctance – short though it may last – to admit that he wants both Sela and Zander.

Sela is just as much a fighter as Rock, and I guess she’d have to be with the company she is in. She and her shipmates keep getting involved in dangerous situations, but she never gives up. She is a competent crewmate, very straightforward, and I liked her role in bringing Zander onboard and making him realize that two partners might be better than one.

Zander is a scientist who wants to be left alone so he can focus on his research into an obscure disease, as he puts it. But that is not to be, thanks to Rock and Sela and their “designs” on someone who might be able to balance their pretty combative relationship. It takes Zander a while to “thaw” and believe in his luck, and he does struggle with the idea that he has nothing of value to contribute to their triad. Except - he couldn’t be more wrong if he tried!

The villain is after Zander, but the reason only emerges slowly. He is a monster, and the brutality with which he tortures his victims, right on the page, was really off-putting for me.  Many people might not mind, and the majority of the story is quite entertaining, so it’s probably just me. But if violence and cruelty are not your thing, this may not be the book for you.

If you like triads with two men and a woman trying to figure out how to relate, if watching them “gel” in an action-packed story is your thing, and if you’re looking for an exciting space adventure and don’t mind it getting quite dark more than once, then you might like this novella.
